    Glad you got it sorted.

So, it seems like the most probable root cause of the problem is that a factory OEM spare rim was tightened onto a hub that had an aftermarket alloy rim hub center cap on it?

That's easily a mistake I could have made - for quite a while I kept a factory stock spare rim under the truck but all my hubs had pro-comp alloys center caps on them.

Now I have an identical spare rim. But if I see someone get a flat on the trail and about to put a factory spare on, I'll make sure they remove that center cap first.

    OK, let's lighten up.

Moose, I think you've hit the proverbial nail on the head with my problem.

Good thing is, lesson learned: make sure you're spare actually fits before you're stuck somewhere, like 6 miles down a dirt road!

    Thanks again to all.

Sorry - I just read the whole thread reiterating the most likely cause, which you previously posted.

Didn't mean to pass it off as my own idea.

FYI - the guy went postal in another thread telling two certified mechanics they didn't know what they were talking about and being rude and insulting to everyone in that thread (including the OP) that didn't accept him as an expert on it all only to have to admit he was wrong about everything he said lol. the mods stepped in and deleted all his posts and I think he almost got banned from the sight

    Ahh just kidding with ya!!

It was more meant for the op to see since he never once acknowledged my numerous attempts to explain the reason the issue arose.
