Right now my 2.4l Taco is riding on 25.5" 195/75-14s. I have 3.58 gearing in the back. I would really like some more power when taking off from red lights because my truck has to try preeetty hard to keep up with the other autos when accelerating away. Pretty soon I'm going to upgrade to 27.4" 225/70-15s and from what I've read about differential gears, after installing these new wheels and tires, my truck is going to have an even harder time keeping up from a complete stop. Right?

How do I find out what gear sizes are available for my truck? The gear code in my door jamb is A02A.

Also, what do you guys think is good gearing for me with these new tires? 4.10?

I've done a mod or two
Lol, you have 25.5in tires with 3.58s..... I have 31in tires with 3.58s. You don't know slow... Yes you will have a harder time getting going. I would say 4.10 is probably good. Go check out randy's ring and pinion for gearing ideas for your truck specifically.

Haha I guess I'm sorta lucky then. Maybe my 2.4 just isn't as strong as it was when it was a wee young engine. But I'll check that out right now.

Just out of curiosity, going up from 3.58, is the order 3.73, 3.91 then 4.10, etc? Did I miss any between those?

edit: for the 7.5" rear end

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I would go with 3.73 gears if you still want decent fuel economy and a little more power at the same time. 4.10's work great too, but running down the highway the RPM's will be higher and gas mileage will sink lower.

If you don't give a damn about mileage, go 4.10 and never look back!

I also have 3.58 with 31x10.50 tires and it's a complete turd! Need to regear for sure & I rarely go over 60 mph. 90% of the time I'm driving under 40 mph. Not sure if I should go with 4.10 or something else.

Hmm I wonder how good 4.30 or 4.56 would work.

    Okay, last question.

I think I'm gonna go with 3.91 gearing. Only thing is I can't find any aftermarket 3.91 gears for ANY Toyota differential. So I'm assuming they only exist from the factory. Does anyone know which Tacomas came with 3.91 gearing for the 7.5" rear end? I'm hoping I can find what I'm looking for at one salvage yard or another.

I don't know of any really aftermarket gers for the 7.5" rear end. 3.91s only came in the 8" and 8.4"

Bummer... :( Well, thanks for the info. Looks like I'm going with 4.10 gears!

    2.4L 2wd 1998 base. engine rebuild w/ 96 head. 8' 3.91 rear end off a 97 4x4 w/ locker.
My rear end went out and I pulled a 97 8' with 3.91 & locker out of a yard. Replaced my stock 7.5, it gave me enough hight to pull my blocks out too.

Edit: the issues u had were brake line length, emergency brake setup, and I had to convert it to a 5 lug
