My backup light switch went out and I replaced it with a new one but now my backup lights will only stay on if I hold my shifter down toward reverse. If I let go they turn off.

I have a five speed manual. I tested the switch and it is fine. Any ideas why?

I never messed with one on a Toyota, but I believe the switch is adjustable.
