are there any hood light mods?

just wanted to know if there are any mods for seeing under the hood at night?

I know I can just put a 12v light bulb socket and switch but I was wondering what others have done that looks nice.

I know anything I put together will look a little ugly and home made so I wondered if I could get some ideas here on what cars to look to take one off of to look OEM.

 

I saw those but im actually looking for less then that, something in a simple basic sertup like a single bulb just to see with.

tacodayne's kits are great and its like daytime at night but that's way over the top of what I had in mind to do.

im thinking way more basic then that like one light bulb in a socket bracket you can screw onto the hood somewhere like my old 74 cougar xr7 had, those had mercury switches in them to turn on when you raise the hood. I think they did away with them because of the mercury switch but im guessing there is still something of that same basic design still in use on some cars.

KC cyclone. KC makes a kit, but this isn't that one. Made mine with two lights and a switch/wire from BeeRadd. He has an ongoing buy for his set-up. However, these are cool. I may add some more.

ok, I'm mainly looking for ideas on different lights and stuff maybe how they are arranged is all im in need of. I did electrical work for 35 years so I have all the wire and switches and all that already, its just the lights I am in need of.

I certainly don't mean to poo-poo anyone doing this as a kit to help others, I applaud them doing that and it takes work to put it all together and shipping it out to people and dealing with the issuesrelated to all of that.

that said, when buying a kit, you pay a premium for "one stop shopping" that I am not inclined to pay.

I want to buy the lights and do it all myself and avoid paying someone to put it all in a box with a switch and some wire for me and ship it to me for a small markup.

what they sell is totally worth it, and its obvious they don't make much money doing it, so im not implying anyone doing this asks too much, im just saying I don't need to pay someone to put a kit together for me is all.

hmm, those led strips in BeeRad's kits looks like a great solution for the type of light I should get, but I doubt if it would stay stuck in the intense heat (110 heat index in the shade in august) we have here. anything not held down by gravity or held in place with a fixed fastener peels off so I can see I would need to use several screws and clamps every few inches to hold it from peeling off. but it is an interesting idea.

thanks, but I already have these switches, they are the basic switches used for any car alarm systems and I sometimes hook them up as a horn alarm for battery thieves, it doesn't protect the truck but if they open the hood the alarm scares the shit out of em lol, and hopefully scares them off too.

 

I just took a factory under-hood lite from an early 90's Chevy pickup. The assembly includes a switch, bulb holder (with plastic cover), a long tether (so that the bulb-holder can be located anywhere under the hood) and a crank to reel it back in. The tether is long enough to stretch over to an adjacent vehicle.

Cost me $15 at the PnP, plus some wire, and a fuse-holder.

Which is why my Cyclones bolt in.

 

I installed these lights from Tacodane last June. They have not had any heat issues. I like the wrap around strips so I'm not casting a shadow on my work.

 

I agree that pattern is better. I've been contemplating added two more cyclones lower in the engine compartment.

 

I think I found the perfect alternative, these are strips but on an aluminum rail that screws on securely so there is no worries about stuff held with tape and I get full coverage. picture shows 2 but the price is just for one and its 19 1/2" long.

I figure 2 of these in pure white color across the top or 3 of these with one the top and one on each side outta do the job nicely and at $5 each they are at the price I wanted them to be in.

 

Clearly they're cheap!

 

thats what worries me lol, ya never know the quality of em or how long they will last but the idea of the rigid strip sounds better then anything that is tapped on with double sided tape
