    So from everything I read, the deckplate mod is completely useless or it feels like you put a v8 in the front of you tacoma. Is it worth it for a budget build? Why or why not?

    with the 2.4 and 2.7 RZ series engines there is very little you can do to gain any real useable power.

    LCE Headers
    Magnaflow 18 inch muffler with stock size piping
    Any complete CAI system like AEM or Injen

    All combined will be a louder slightly more responsive throttle and smoother mid to top end power range performance with maybe 10 HP without a tune.

    Thats close to $800+ for that. regear if you're on larger tires as well to regain some lost power.

    you get a nice benefit from just pulling the airbox then pop the air duct 90 out of the fender.

    now cut it off after about 1/2" on the inside the fender side of it so it goes through the fender but you are cutting off the whole elbow curved part of it where all the restriction is, along with no longer forcing it to suck air from the duct so it breathes much better, plus by doing it this way, you get the same benefit but there is no chance of letting dirt and trash or anything into the filter box.

    the 3" hole you now have opened up to breathe better is all you need to help your engine and it still looks stock.

    plus its 100% free and takes 5 minutes of your time and if you want to go into mud you don't have to stop and go cap off that huge gapping hole in your filter box.

    Correct me if Im wrong, but what you are saying is to just take off the elbow from the fender where the stock intake is and the airbox w/the filter and that is just as good as the deckplate?

    yep, it does exactly the same thing, allow unrestricted airflow to the engine so it gets all it wants, and its easier without the extra work and expense of the deck plate. plus its reversible by just replacing the $2 elbow if you ever want to put it back stock.

    because the 6 cylinder has more power, people think doing anything to get more power from 4 cylinders are not worth doing. just ignore them.

    it is worth it to open up the intake to breathe better but naturally a 6 cylinder would "feel" more of a power increase they we do with 4 cylinders but you will notice a difference

    Describe WORTH IT??

    What exactly do you expect out of it?

    I installed it on my 96 (3.4L) along with K&N drop in filter.

    You get better throttle response. I never noticed any noise. Maybe a slight sucking sound that added to the throttle response. Sounded neat actually. The only time I installed the lid was when going off-road to keep debris out.

    It's a cheap mod. If you don't like it, put the lid in and forget it.

    not unless you fender is filled to the top with mud and in that case the air duct that draws air in from the bottom of the fender in front of the passenger side door is already full of mud.

    you are pulling air from the fender and the whole fender would need to be under water to have a problem and in that case you need a snorkel or a submarine lol.

    just take a good look at the fender and where all the holes in it are, it will draw air from all of them and mostly the closet ones. you can see how its impossible to get mud into your airbox without sinking the truck underwater into a swamp

    on my 4 cylinder it was noticeable thing of having a "little" more pep to it in its throttle response but I don't think it changes your 1/4 mile times any lol.

    WOT = wide open throttle

    You can do it and its easily reversible, just put the deck plate back in.

    Try it and if you don't like it its only like $15 in parts. I still leave mine out.

    WOT= wide open throttle

    I paid $4 for mine and noticed a small mpg increase, so I thought it was worth it.
