My 1st son is due May 25th and I could not be more excited! I travel a lot for work and have yet to see if a car seat will work in my 2000 xtra cab. The little fold down seats have me thinking it may not work.

I really like have a truck that is paid for but I want my son to be able to go with me whenever need be.

So, if you have an xtra cab and fit a carseat in the back, please let me know. This way I can stop lusting over brand new double cabs that are way too much $.

    Thanks!

I'm on my second D-cab. They are great for hauling 1-2 kids. More than 2, start looking for a minivan.

My xtra cab has a little stool thing on the floor in the back that is made to hold up a car seat. There are also securing rings built in back there too. I am not a father so I haven't used it but the gear is there.

    I appreciate the congrats.

Thanks Snowman. I will eventually get a d-cab but or now...I just bought my current Tacoma from the original owner in Feb. of 2014. Still new to me so I would like to hang on to it for a while.

Where are the security rings for the carseat? I couldn't find them.

Between the seat and back. Or look in the owner manual. I have mine hooked up that way.

Double cab for 2 kids is fine - until they grow up to small adults!
I've got 14 & 12 yr olds and the back seat of the DC is ok for under 3 hr trips, otherwise we opt for the Venza or Tundra Crewmax (you could play Frisbee in the back seat area)
    Good luck!

I have a 98' xtracab & it doesn't have any rings back there so I'm not sure when they added them but I would guess in 2001 when they updated some stuff.

My son is now 3 & it took me lots of trying out different seats until I finally found one that would work. The seat is on the expensive side but it is also very highly rated in crash tests & made in the USA. Can you really put a price tag on your child's saftey? I found the Britax Marathon fits back there & has locking clamps that clamp the seatbelt in case the vehicle doesn't have loops for the tether system. It looks like they have a newer version out now that is even easier to install than mine. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00M1...dpID=51ZBDu0piuL&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SY200_QL40#

The problem your going to run into is until your child is 2 & you can forward face your passenger seat will be unusable. I'm not sure if even this seat will fit back there in the rear facing mode. You may have to turn airbag off & install it rear facing on front seat until you can rear face. I have to put my seat back in tonight or tomorrow so I'll try it out in a couple different positions for you & take pictures.

I have an 04 DC and a second kiddo (girl) due in 4 weeks. I enjoyed putting our dog (German Shepherd) and my son in the back for buzzing around town but now I will have issues with trying to travel with 5. I think a topper will be in short order. One with windows so the dog doesn't overheat. Can't wait for the kids to sit in the front so dad can take them and the dog camping/wheeling. Mom can have aaallll the she time she can handle.

I really want my dog in the cab though, maybe I can rig the car seats to the floor of the bed.... See you on the six o'clock news!

    (Disclaimer...I'm not serious.):D

I have friend that has a month old. We put his sons car seat in the back. It fits snuggly....as in don't be 6ft tall and expect to slide the seat all the way back, because the child seat won't let you. Maybe time for a fullsize truck if your a big guy with a big family.

Congratulations! I upgraded from a single cab Chevy to a double cab Tacoma a few months after my son was born. I think Xtra cab will be sufficient as long as you have one of the smaller car seats. It won't be ideal, but you can make it work. In my single cab I turned off the airbags and had him in the front seat, which could be an option for you as well.

Wow, thanks for all the support everyone! So much advice. I look forward to the pics of the seat installed, jkulysses.
I would love a new dc and have been looking but man, do they hold there value. That's a good thing other than the fact I have not had a car payment in over 10 years.
Another thing about the dc I'm not a huge fan of is the shorter bed. I know you can get the long bed on the 05 and up, but I personally think they look strange in that orientation.
Anyway, I can't wait to meet my little guy and I love Tacoma's. I'll either make it work or...Have a lifted dc with a topper lol

Here are two car seats in my 2000 Xtra Cab. My wife being a foot short than me had comfort in the passenger seat and my kid behind her had plenty of leg room. My other kid behind me (I'm 6'3) not much leg room at all, plus I was 2-3 clicks forward in my seat which wasn't the most comfortable. Times I wish I had a double cab but we only had the whole family in it once. That's what we have a Pilot for :). BTW I do not have the safety hooks in my truck.
