The black paint around my '96 Tacoma's rear window has been flaking off. You can see it in the picture on both vertical and horizontal pieces of metal. How can I touch this up? Just tape it off, spray on some primer and then a black paint that kinda' sorta' matches? Doesn't have to be perfect. Looking for any hints so I don't do anything dumb :)

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I think some people use flat black vinyl trim tape. [IMG] Go carbon fiber!

if you want to paint on metal you need self etching primer first so it sticks.

I think its like a powder coat finish on it and corrosion and moisture gets under it and separates from the metal so it will probably keep on peeling in different spots over time.

if you want a once and done solution they pull out the back glass and sand it all to bare metal then repaint and reinstall, it will look new again and last forever. all depends how much work you are willing to put into it.

if its just a truck and you don't care then do the tape solution

I had never even heard of the tape solution. Seems good enough for me. Is the flat black vinyl trim tape something I get at a car part shop? Or I can order it from Amazon or someplace online?

Yeah there was a member here a couple weeks ago that ended up using that tape on his "trim strips" under the door windows. He was satisfied. I'm gunna do the same for myself. My under window pieces are peeling off exposing the chrome(I hate chrome!) So I'll give her a try, kinda worried about the tape not addhearing super well but well see. Its better than chrome poking through here and there!

Just for closure (I'm the OP) thought I'd finish up this thread. For my '96 tacoma with lots of paint missing and chrome showing around the rear window (see picture in my post), I bought some black vinyl trim tape as suggested.

And it worked great! My first time doing it, so it wasn't perfect (if you are really looking close). But from even a foot away, it looks fine, and much better than the missing paint/chrome. Plenty good for my 18 year old son who will be inheriting this 19 year old truck. I tell you, the more I hear about how much people like Gen 1's, I'm wondering if I should get a newer truck for him, and I keep my '96 ;). It will be a sad day when I hand over the keys.

I had never even heard of the trim tape, and now it is all done and looks great. Thanks for the suggestions and help.

You can see the before picture in my original post. Here is the after picture. From 2 feet away it looks fine., From 6" away you can see subtle seams etc., but who cares. I didn't just tape the part with the chrome showing through. I did all of of the back so it would look consistent.

I just used Testors enamel model paint. YMMV.

We'd have to see them side-by-side to see which is better. I'd think if you were careful with the paint, it would look better. No small overlap seams or possible tiny air bubbles. But with the tape you don't have to be careful. More or less just press it on, and use a knife to cut off the overlap.

interesting old topic, my black window frame seems to be fading (normal stuff) and want it to look sharper if possible good as like new
the testors sounds good, magic marker probably would wash off easily?
the tape may be a good solution too, i don't know
i like this solution below too for longevity, has anybody done this?
