I have a 98 Tacoma, and I been trying to figure out why my truck stalls when at a complete stop. When accelerating it is fine, but coming to a stop light it would stutter and shutoff unless I kept my foot on the gas.
    -tps already checked no problems
    -cleaned the carb

Anyone have any ideas or exp this type of issue. I been trying to figure this out for past 7 months lol.. please helpp!!! thanks!

    That is weird.
When you say cleaned the carb, what do you mean? Because there is no carbs on our trucks.... LOL.
I would clean the mas airflow sensor, but other than that, i have no idea.
    Subbed for the information.

    Not much info here :(

    4 or 6 cyl?
    auto or standard?
    stock or modified?
    recent work?
What have you tried in the last 7 months?

symptoms come on suddenly or gradually?
What happens when, coasting with foot off the gas pedal? Still stall?

    all stock
cleaned throttle, cleaned maf, checked tps sensor, happens every time when coming to a stop and giving it no gas. If im at a complete stop i can feel the truck trying to shut off than all of a sudden shuts off. if the truck is accelerating it has no problems only at a stop..thats all i have done in the past 7 months couldnt figure out what was wrong..could it be hoses? or anything? cel says something about tps sensor but that has been replaced and still has the same code

there is a sensor that makes the truck idle higher if it is going to die, i forget what the sensor is, but that is probably bad!

normally if the truck is about to die because of low idle, the sensor would kick the idle higher real quick so it doesnt die.

The 5vze commonly has issue with a dirty idle control unit (IAC)
And it's seems inline with your issue description.
Intake cleaning may not clean the IAC fully.
The internal vane inside the IAC gets dirty with carbon build up
and sometimes can be stubborn to remove.

I had to use a thin wood dowel to scrape the carbon
    build up off the vane...
a good soaking first... helps break the carbon down
making it easier to scrape off.

Don't scratch the vane or interior when cleaning...
if marred... it may never work properly again.
that is why a thin wood dowel was used while cleaning.
Tho' a good soaking first... will be necessary to soften that up.

Make sure no chemical residue is remaining inside the IAC's interior
after cleaning... or it could cause issue with other sensors.
There are sensor safe cleaners available...
but they may not soften the carbon enough to be scraped off.

my '00 had similar issue around 120K.
And after a few days or so of misbehavior (odd idling)...
the engine wouldn't stay running at all (even with throttle applied)

The IAC can be removed and if cleaned properly will likely work fine.
It does require some effort to get to and remove.
But isn't by any means difficult.

Removal and value testing is covered in the FSM
or DIY write ups can be found if searched.

A replacement IAC is somewhat pricey
if cleaning that does not correct the issue.

So most likely you think this is the main cause of issue and nothing else?

There can always be additional faults...

But your reference to the erratic idle (up/down/stall) at start...
is exactly what mine was doing when it failed.

Cleaning the IAC... fixed it for me.

I have done this on several 5vze's with success.

Including for a friend that purchased a junk yard 5vze
to replace his 5vze that threw a rod.

In his case... I was able to clean it up with my dowel
    and some brake cleaner.
Was purdy sweet to hear his junk yard motor fire up and purr at idle.

His junk yard 5vze was dang dirty internally...
and we had to do three oil changes to get that dirty out.
We also had to clean the intake as that had been seriously neglected.

just got a simple lift on her
i had vaccume line problems all the time with my truck a while back, but it would never actually die because the iac would kick the idle back up.
