what gasket material to use

    i am planning on dropping my oil pan this weekend to redo the old gasket that has developed a small leak. i just wanted to get some suggestions from folks who know, so what do ya'll recommend? I almsot forgot, how tight do i need to get the nuts/bolts when i reinstall the pan, is there a certain ft./lbs to torque it to, or just watch unitl the gasket starts coming out.

    I prefer a rubber gasket. If you use cork, I suggest coating the entire gasket in RTV, top and bottom.

    i can't seem to find a rubber gasket, everybody has told me that you have to get some permatex and make your own.

    You can purchase gasket material (usually) at your local parts store, cork included. I am assuming they are only offering a thin felt/paper type of gasket? No matter what material you end up with, I would suggest coating the entire gasket in this stuff, especially if it is a paper type gasket.

    98tacoma, i did some checking yesterday and found a rubber replacement gasket by felpro. i will probably go this route, what do you think.

    I would go that route. Rubber lasts longer than other materials.

    is there any tips/tricks to make the gasket stick to one surface during install, that it will not move out of place while i'm getting the nuts/bolts started, and how tight to i need to get the nuts/bolts.

    You can use that gasket stuff I referenced earlier. Make sure both surfaces are clean. Wipe the bottom of the block with the gasket stuff and press the new gasket to it. It should hold it in place. The stuff is really tacky. Line your holes up so you don't pinch the gasket with the bolts.

    I believe they are only M6 or M8 bolts. They don't require a lot of load to torque them down, some where between 10-20 ft/lbs. I generally put enough pressure on the bolt so the gasket compresses a little, meaning it will start to squish outward. Too much and you will damage the gasket.
