Clutch? Doesn't work! What the heck happened??

2001 Tacoma TRD SR5, 5 speed manual 149,000 miles

I started the truck, it wouldn't go into 1st gear or reverse. The clutch pedal feels very light when pushing it to the floor.

The clutch fluid resevoir looks full.

I turned the truck off, put it in gear, and started it in reverse. I backed up about 50 feet.
I got it out of reverse gear, and into neutral, by pushing the gearshift lever.

I repeated the above except I put it in first gear. I couldn't get it out of gear, so I turned off the key to stop the truck.

The truck was running and shifting great yesterday.
I looked underneath but didn't see anything broken or leaking.

You may have to replace the synchro rings on 1:st and reverse gears.

Or more likely yet would be a bad slave cylinder.

Just my 2 guesses.

 

before i bought a new slave cyl i would try bleeding it. does it shift through the gears with the truck off?

 

my truck did similar stuff. My clutch wouldn't come back off of the floor one night. I had to pull it back up with my foot. When the clutch pedal did this, the transmission would engage and I would have to turn the truck off sometimes to get it to stop. I couldn't shift through the gears either until I pulled the clutch pedal back up. I went ahead and replaced the clutch, flywheel, and the slave cylinder. After this, the problem went away for about 10 days. Then it came back, worse than ever. I was really scared about even driving it, especially if I had the clutch engaged while in gear at a stoplight because it would start engaging the tranny after a couple of seconds. Finally I went ahead and replaced the master cylinder and it fixed the problem. The cylinder was letting fluid seep past the piston and engaging the tranny. Hope this helps.
