My truck has a blood clot...

So I went to test drive a new STI, and it just so happened that my truck got sick while I was there. (And i didn't even get to drive the car)


She's home safe now.

On the way there, my truck started sputtering, i put the pedal on the floor and got no power from it.
My buddy figured spark plugs right away, then after looking at the car for a bit, we were about to leave, and the truck started, sputtered for a second, and died. I had two issues about a week ago where the truck had a hard time starting. after talking to a toyota mechanic and a few people, i'm pretty darn sure it's the fuel pump.
sound right?

Ok, so how do i change a fuel pump?
how can I diagnose if is my fuel pump?
I can ride my motorcycle to work so I'll get lots of time to do this and I can't afford to get someone else to do it

I would just change the plugs and see if thats what it is, because thats what it sounded like at first for me.

but dont take my word.... free bump

 

I had one of the plugs out the other day and I was un aware that it has to be tightened exactly to spec. I have a torque wrench, should I just check that one plug first?
Plugs are dual prong so the gap isnt an issue, and the one plug i had out looked fine.

I like the dual prong style plugs, and at 5 bucks a pop thats pretty good isnt it?

 

did some research, going with the denso dual plugs instead

 

Fuel pump, air mass meter or fuel regulator.
If you got any oil on the plug the truck could run like crap but should still run.

 

id say fuel pump most likely. or an air intake leak cause if you ever tried starting the truck without the intake youll notice it will run horible for a second and stall out.

 

my buddy had the same problem on his 1st gen. looks just like yours except it's a double cab he took it back to the dealer and they said it was the fuel filter and maybe dirt in the fuel lines, they cleaned it, still ran like crap, they did it again, same thing, finally the mechanic changed out one plug and that fixed it. I changed the rest out for my buddy so he wouldn't have to pay the dealer anymore money they were pushing getting the fuel injectors cleaned but they wanted $150 for that. My friend bought the denso's from the dealer @ 5 bucks each thats what they used. Hope this helps try the plugs and if it still rides like shit, look at cleaning your fuel system out.

 

Is there any codes? That would be a big help, as opposed to the shot-gun approach.

 

When he took it to the dealer no codes were going off, no check engine, no low tire pressure, another words there are no codes to see or help diagnose the problem. But when i changed out his plugs it ran fine, of course the fuel filter and lines had been cleaned already. (fuel pump not changed)

 

Good you got something working again! This is an issue regarding the Expedition, every once in a long while it kinda sputters and dies then doesn't wanna start right away (kinda turns over a few too many times) but does start...maybe the plugs are wearing out?

 

When you turn the key on can you hear the pump running?? thats a way to know if its working or not, if it works it will come on for a short time and go off

 

i just changed my fuel filter a couple months ago. here's the reason I think it's fuel pump. Last night I drove on (E)mpty for about 20K. filled up this morning with 20 L and it happened soon after. I think while I was on Empty the fuel pump picked up some crud from the bottom of the tank.
I'm going to do new plugs first and then work on the fuel pump.
is it hard to change the fuel pump? should i just take it apart and clean it?

 

if it wont run at all sounds like a fuel issue, doing the pump is just a matter of dropping the tank and replacing the pump, not bad at all

fuel pumps are easy but they are a PITA. IMO it is best to do on an empty tank, or damn near cause your gonna be under there with gasoline, either spilling it or sniffing it in a small amount of space unless you have a lift. Changed out the pump on my jeep a year ago , and it totally sucked, all i used was a 3 ton jack to lower it. Make sure all your seals are tight and leak proof because after i was done and went to fill up i noticed my jeep was taking a leak at the pump, because the seal around the pump and the tank wasn't holding (gasket busted) so had to drop it again after I syphened out the gas.

 

IMO I would go with the full assembly, I went the cheap route with my jeep and just purchased the pump and reused everything else, and it didn't quit work out for me, winded up replacing the sock, EC's, and tubes

 

well damn it. that sucks. so prob a couple hundred bucks for the whole assembly?

 

so where do I start? any recommended pumps? all the help i can get is greatly appreciated. thanks
