We have an Access Cab 4x4 SR5.
Around town 20 mpg
Freeway has been around 22-23 mpg

Really depends how you drive it. Lighter foot means better mileage.

reg cab 4x4 2.7 5spd with 3.58 gears I was getting 28 stock with light foot and getting 20-24 with 35's...something has to be wrong with your truck,..... MAF or O2 sensor or something.,... even clogged air filter will hurt..but not that bad

Data request

I know I'm probably looking like a troll posting this in several threads but...

I'm trying to gather some specific data to really analyze the trends on gasmileage based on several factors (not just the VPE) and add to the report started by Mav and 007Taco. I'm hoping to get as many data points as possible so we can see some real trends and eliminate as many variables as possible. If you think you might be willing to track a tank or 2 check out this thread and help out.
Thanks
James

sslongmuir, i have the same truck you do. same intake\exhaust same tires, i'm getting 20-22 around town shifting at about 3-3500Rpms. shifting up around 5grand+ im getting about 17-18.

on the highway i actually get worse than around town since when running 75-80 my truck is pulling about 3500Rpms.

however if you want your truck to really get a big boost in power ( dont know how many miles are on yours ) but changing the fuel filter is like... wow... different truck. i believe that also helped with the gas mileage a little.

well my truck does this thing when its in the higher rpm range. i hardly ever get past 3000rpm so im not heavy footing it, but @ 4grand it will vibrate like it has a bum cylinder but it never bothers @ low rpm. i was thingking of changing the fule filter to see but its snowing here so its cold and shitty lol. it also idles at about 850 instead of 1000 but it is rough and it goes away when i take my foot off the gas

My truck idles at about 850, it sounds like you have a fuel or air problem or possibly the MAF sensor. when a tacomas or any toyota for that matter MAF sensor goes bad the truck will run like SHIT and get bad mileage. The fuel filter would be my best bet, check your air filter clean it if it needs it.. The fuel filter is a SOB to change, in my opinion, but it makes a hell of a difference.

well i just drove NH and wow. 16.6mpg @ about 70-75. somethings def wrong. well the check engine light is on but i scanned it and it say insufficent engine temperature in closed loop config. I changed the engine temp sensor but it didnt make it go out but when i guys mentioned the MAS it was what was thinking. when i first got the truck it run shitty so i sprayed it off ith carb cleaner and it spunked right up. but cold it still b bad/ how much o they run? I will also change the fuel filter but how do i get off those couplings without heat?

might need a thermostat if it is opening too early and not letting engine heat up that code can blink on

Let me first state that I am not a mech. but have you checked the spark plug wires/ plugs ? I was starting to get codes on a Dodge and we went through the course you are, ended up all I needed was a complete tune up, new wires, spark plugs, fuel filter, and a new fuel pump, only because it was so easily accessable, a bottle of fuel line cleaner, air filter, oil change, and wow for about $350.oo it ran like it should have for years to come. Good luck.

You may also want to do a compression check. Worst case scenario - you may have a bum cylinder.

The reason that I say this - because you said it acts funny at high RPMs.

Mpg

My 1995 regular cab 4x4 gets 20-22 but I also carry a pioneer set, high lift jack, chains, come-a-longs, 3 dogs, dog mattress, water, dog food and other isc. items to a tune of about 3-400 pounds. It's running 31x10.5-15's. Every thing else is stock except a high flow cat by Stanley Hammers. Next weekend the mods begin!!!!

when i went to the beach in mine, at that time all i had was a K&N air filter and we figured 28.6 mpg. but of course that was going downhill too, so going back home in VA (i live in the mountains) i got about 26 or so

I just filled up and we just got about 1.5ft of snow. i never even locked the hubs and still the fuel mileage is getting worse. it went from 20 to 18 to 16 while going to newhampshire and today its 15mpg. I hope this trend turns around and i get 30 lol. Somethings deff screwing it up.
