Grey wire mod

Yeah. It all worked out. Very pleased with the mod already. Cant wait to go offroad.

 

just did the gray wire mod on my 03 tocoma double cab 4x4 trd an was very suprised at how easy it was, i took it for a test run is some lose dirt an both back wheel locked like they should, dont understand why toyota didnt make there trucks this way from the factory

 

So now that you guys have done the grey wire mod, like myself, when do you ever find yourself using Low gear? I haven't felt like i've had to use it once since doing the GW mod.

 

Thats probably cause your a flat-lander. I am still forced to use 4LO all the time when offraod to tackle obstacles at a slow enough speed to not trash my truck. And steep hills require the low gearing.

 

i saw this mod on here and was too scared to try it.. but was watching tv this morning and saw an episode on a 99 tacoma doing a gray wire mod and a super charger.. so after watching the episode and looking at your pictures.. decided to do it. took apart everything did the mod and put everything back together in 7 mins. love it

 

yeah that sounds right, the only thing i didnt like about it was putting the intake in the tool box, iv had my bed take on some water off roading.. and in my driveway if it rains.. but i still want one! any idea on a price range?

 

I guess that's it. I tried using Low range last time I was off-roading and it just felt like I was wasting gas.

 

does anyone know if this will work on a 2wd prerunner

So under my 4x4 computer there is such a clusterf*** of wires i didnt even mess with it. I went to unplug it and couldnt, I felt like i was about to rip the black box off. Even if i did unplug it, with that mess of wires I pry had 2'' of play to snip grey wire and splice new ground wire. Not really looking for advice, but I did not get as lucky as you ppl doing this is 7-10 minutes. Round 2 might start tomorrow... With a little more agression

 

Did you have this plug ?

 

I attached pics.. and of course they are not right side up. But it is just hard to pinch that prong or whatever.. pinch and pull, mine will not come out. I have applied enough pressure to it that it should have come out. Wiggle and pull, it doenst want to move. I dont want to give up on it though, it would be so fun to have. The pics kinda show how it has limited access. Im sure im not the only one who has had wires to work around but mine is being stubborn...

 

Yep, you just gotta be firm with it. When I did it, I had to hold onto the computer with my left hand, and pull the plug out with the other. Mine felt like the computer was going to break off its mount, so I held it and gave the plug a firm pull and it worked great.

I have been eying up this thread for some time and am trying to get all my ducks in a row before I attempt it.
Couple questions however- Does the gauge of wire you use for the ground matter, (18 okay)?
Has anyone done this with a switch? I remember someone mentioning this in an earlier post. I do like the idea of being able to (return) the truck to factory settings, just in case.

What do you all think?

 

Why bother with a switch ? you already have one...

 

True, but would a secondary switch return the factory switch to factory settings. In a sense of being a fail-safe just in case problems come up with this mod, etc. Or is this redundant?

 

There should not be 15 pages on this thread - there are SO many write ups of this mod and its the easiest beginner mod to do.
