Fuel Filter

Can anyone give me a link to a guide for the fuel filter replacement on my '04 4x4 Tacoma?

Your fuel filter is located under the exhaust manifold. You'll need to undo the manifold to get the filer out.

 

No, 4 banger. The filter for the 6 is under the driver's side seat on the inner frame rail.

 

I really wish people would fill in their profile so we wouldn't have to ask each and everytime what truck, year, cylinders etc they had.

If you have the 3.4L - it's mounted on the underside of the floor board inside of the frame rail underneath the drivers side door.

Easy replacement..... Have bucket & fire extinguisher in hand....

Just unscrew it (being careful not to twist/kink lines). In order to get the lines out of the filter fittings, I had to unscrew the mounting brackets that hold the hard lines to the body on both sides of the filter.....that'll give you enough room to get the lines out of the filter.

Get a 'flare wrench' to do the job and you might want to coat/soak the fittings with PB blaster and let them sit (to penetrate the rust).

 

Any reason to not run one in that location on the 4 cylinder?

 

Hey, that sounds like common sense.

 

Why the need? You'll only need to replace the thing once, maybe twice in the lifetime of your truck. Toyota calls the fuel filter a non-maintenance item.

 

Thanks for all the replies. I have the 6 cylinder. It doesnt sound like a tough job although I am wondering why I would need a 'flare wrench' to do this.

I know Toyota doesnt call this a maintenance item but I just dont buy that. I have 70k miles and have never changed it and others on here say how dirty their filter was when they removed it. I run 87 octane gas in New Orleans and can only imagine what some of the gas station tanks here look like after sitting under water as long as they did. I imagine the gas Im putting in my truck has a little trash in it.

I am planning to include this in my basic tuneup.

I am replacing rotors (had to turn them at last brake job and now they are warped)
Fuel Filter (never changed)
Oil and filter
Air Filter (been awhile, recommendations? is a K&N worth it or is it BS)
Spark Plugs (never changed)
Should I change PCV valve?
What about plug wires?
How about time for seafoam?

 

What is your opinion on K&N filters? I have always figured that the filter wasnt necessarily the bottleneck of the intake system so it wouldnt make that much of a difference. However, there are others that swear by them.

On spark plugs, the gap is .44?

Also, whats the best way to do the seafoam? I have seen some put in gas tank and others do on vacuum hose on intake.

 

Exactly.

Flare wrench offers a better 'grab' on the fittings and less likely to round off the corners.
