Here's the rack I just built with my old man today - definitely makes loading/unloading easier when I'm by myself. Total cost is less that $45 - and all supplies bought at Lowes. Don't have plans we drew up.....but I will post more pictures to get an idea of how it was built.....veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery simple with 2 people.

    Not going to brag.
The Sport Rack brackets seem like a bad solution. From what I can see in the video, the bar slides through the bracket, but nothing clamps the bar in place. I would imagine a bumpy road would cause the bars to shift out of place and possibly even fall off.

I've got a set of thule bars on my truck that I use for kayaks, canoes, snowboards, lumber.. Anything really. You can take them off in about 5-10 minutes, but I don't see the point in removing them, I tend to need them atleast once a week.

In my old truck I built a frame out of 2x4s that sat in the bed and was held down by a ratchet strap. That way there was nothing touching the roof.

And as for what someone said about just putting it in the bed and flagging it.. I believe the law in many places states that you can't have anything stick out more than 6 ft, and must be flagged

    Hi Ruben,
I'm not positive, but what I can see from the youtube video of the Access Cover, it would probably inhibit the cover in the closed position. I have another version coming out soon that's a clamp on bracket & that would work. However, the 05+ Taco's have the rail system & not a regular bed rail which isn't conducive to having the clamp bracket style. Either style bracket could mount with a hard cover style cover, but that's not what you have. So until I find out more, I don't think it will work for your setup unless the cover is in the open position. The following YouTube video: How to Mount the L2S Sport Rack Bracket, might be a little better illustrated.

This is the only picture I have right now, it works quite well. Since this picture i've added padding and two quick release bike mounts, so I can carry my two kayaks and bikes for adventures!
I've also added paddle clips onto those side bars. I've been putting the life jackets on those as well but i'm looking for another option.

Impressive setups in this thread! I just traded in my 2000 extended cab for the 2011 access cab. Anyone have pics or advice for putting my xsporter on the new truck? it appears that with the new bed rail profile, I need an adapter - XK1?

Help! I don't want to sell my xsporter rack!

Thank you! FYI: Thule says it won't work, but I am up for spending the $40 to try it!

That's weird because it does work.............

Works great. Only thing I would change is that the adapters had stainless threaded sleeves in them instead of the aluminum being threaded. If you take them off and on a lot this could become an issue of thread fatigue.

It is nice to be reminded that gadgets and racks are nice, but not always necessary. Thank you tacosuprem!

I was thinking about building my own rack and I came across these brackets from mcmaster.com

    http://www.mcmaster.com/#rail-brackets/=cer42v

(search "rail & framing fittings" if the link is broken)

You could make just about any configuration you can dream up. If you advance two pages you will see the brackets that would allow you to tap into the frame rails on a 2nd gen.

I think I would use black pvc with these brackets, since I want the ability to carry two canoes, which is not that much weight. Also, cheaper and lighter than aluminum or steel.

If I pull the trigger I will post the details.
