tranny & diff oil questions

this is prob in a thread somewhere -

BUT -

2004 4wd non TRD

I just dropped the original factory fluids from the tranny and diff.

the diff fluid was what I expected - dark, thick, sticky, with that gear oil smell.

the tranny fluid was clear and much thinner without the heavy gear oil smell.

question - in the threads here I have read many times over that folks are using the same replacement fluid for both units - ie. 75-90.

BUT - it would appear that the factory used different fluids - is that true?

can I get an informed opinion about this?

thanks much !!!

for both diffs and transfer case........75w90 is fine. and if you have a manual tranny....75w90 is also fine.....if you have an auto, you'll need something else........like toyota t-iv(t-4).

hi will -

thanks for the info -

but the question remains - and that is, does the factory put the same fluids in the tranny, diff, and xfer cases? or are we just retrofitting up to the same fluid for simplicitys sake?

it sure didn't look like the same fluids coming out.

actually.......good point......they dont. in the transfer case and front diff...they use 75w90, and the rear diff they use 80w90, and a different oil in the auto trannys. most of us switch over to synthetic 75w90 for simplicity, and its pretty good stuff.
