Hi all- Just completed reassembly after replacing rod bearings on this 02 2.7L 4 Cyl gas engine W/ 47K on thee odo. Came in for rod knock-found bearing separation on No. 3 & 4. bearing inserts. Apparently faulty manufacturing:notsure:- no blueing/no heat evidence. Of course we had the cams and lifters out and our timing has been double checked. ( the balance shafts were not removed) Upon initial startup, there is a knock/rattle that sounds as if the pistons are touching the valves. Wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to experience this? Waiting at the screen.Thanks- GMRToy

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
It's a non inteference engine so the valve shouldn't be slapping the piston.

Did you secure the sub gear to the main gear when you removed the exhaust cam?

Negative- Did not secure the sub gear to main gear on exhaust cam.

See page EM-40 (7 of 9). I am not saying this is the problem because it is hard to help diagnose something without actually seeing or hear the issue but it may be a good starting point.

Also, here is the FSM. The 2.7L is the 3RZ motor.
Is the CEL throwing a code?

98Tacoma27- Thanks for the response. We yanked the exhaust cam- tensioned the spring, installed the temp bolt, & reinstalled the shaft & removed the bolt. Started the engine and let oil pressure build, the engine is relatively quiet at idle. but when the throttle is cracked- immediatly there is this rapping/rattling noise that does not abate until base idle is achieved. Even then (base idle) the noise is still audible and it can be felt when my hand is on the engine. when the clutch is depressed there is no change- & the vibration is transferred to the pedal as well. Scratching our collective head... Thanks- GMRToy

Can you use a stethoscopeto determine the exact location? I gather that engine runs fine (no roughness or engine bouncing) except for the rapping noise? Did the re-install make a change?

98tacoma27- I tried pinpointing with a steth early on, but the noise is so prevalent that it seems to be all over. If I had to say- then the block seems to transfer the most noise. This noise was not there before teardown- just the rod knock. And yes- the engine seems to run fine otherwise, although I haven't tried revving very much beyond low/medium idle. This engine has very little wear anywhere- crosshatch still at top of ring travel, machine ridges still on main inserts, no out-of-round or taper on rod journals. Thanks- GMRToy

Hmm....You say the noise was not there before the tear down....May seem stupid to ask, but was anything dropped intot he engine crank case?

By the way- no CEL. We've Thought maybe timing chain- but the noise carries with it some serious vibes. Sometimes this strikes me as a heavy scraping noise as with a flex plate broken. Or comparable to an older 2.5 GM With a worn phenolic timing gear.

Sounds like it might be piston slap. Did you put the rods/pistons back in the same cylinders?

As for piston slap- did not remove pistons from rods, located pistons in same holes, located rods w/ marks to the same side of crank, did locate ring end gaps in same position as removed. No slap before teardown. How much noise & vibration could come from a loose timing chain? When we did exhaust cam gear as per 98tacoma27, I pushed on the chain below the intake cam sprocket & got a little movement- did'nt seem like any slack.

Have you looked at the crank since? I am wondering if you have spun a bearing.
