You are at the timing belt interval change with 98 k on the clock. It sounds like you may just need a good tune up. Check your compression and change your plugs.

It is a good starting point and easy to to do. It is possible. Here is a good chart on how to "read" your plugs. Make sure the new ones are properly gapped.

Well these tires will suck the power out of a motor that was lacking power to start with..

You may want to research a way to adjust the Clock spring on the Air box.
Then adjust the gap in plugs. Add a hotter coil pack and make sure all the grounds are clean and the battery is strong.

When I worked at the dealer and saw a few hunder of these get rebuilt do to head gasket campain we sent a few out for porting polishing.
THese motors neve did much even when you did do everything right.
But 20 HP can befound with adding a hotter spark and better air flow and headers...

But you need to research this. It is not legal in all states.

yeah really dude if all this happened when you re-geared and put on 35" tires, then that is your problem

Ok the 5.29s will spin those 35's without a problem. My 89 had a 3.0 5.29's and 35's and no problems and still had ok power even with a dead cylinder. A 3.0 will never win races and was underpowered from the factory.

No mater what you do to it to get power it will still suck.

I bet your HG's are failing. Check your oil!! If the oil is ok run seafoam through it. Also clean your airfilter, change your fuel filter. If you get really crazy put a leak down tester on the engine.

These 3.slow engines are notorious for being under powered. BTW, you have a Hilux, not a Tacoma.
