I have been looking for a used Tachoma and have approx $6K to work with. From what I am seeing it appears my choices are 2000 and older and have around 150K miles on them.

    I have two questions:
    1. At what milage should I generally shy away from a truck?
    2. With the frame recalls are all 95 through 2000 Tacoma's frames bad or going to rust out quickly if exposed to NE Ohio winters?

    Thanks,

    Eric

The mileage isn't really a concern with these trucks. However, I would look at the maintenance schedule and upkeep on a higher mileage truck. As long as it was taken care off it will last forever. The frame, ugh. If you can find an 95.5-00 that survived the buyback it should have a 15 yr warranty on the frame. 01-04 had frame swaps and also the warranty. If you do find one you are interested in, that is the first place you should inspect. You can take steps to prevent the rusting/corrosion of the frame by routinely inspecting it and addressing any rust spots post haste. There are several rust inhibitor coatings and sprays on the market.

When does the 15 year warranty start? If the warranty starts on the model year it could be ending as early as next year if you buy an 1995 truck.

It' starts the day it was inspected IIRC. I had mine bought back and can't remember the exact details to a tee.

Is there a website i can go to and enter a VIN # to see if a truck has been inspected?

I honestly don't know. You should be able to give the VIN to a local dealer or call corporate and they should be able to look it up.

This article says "from the original date of purchase".

I got my 2000 tacoma 2.7l prerunner about 3-4 years ago had 53,000 miles on it and paid $8,000 IMHO not a bad deal. When I was looking for one every one of them had like 100k-180k and wanted like upwards of $10,000. Found my truck in a local bulletin board. I have ZERO RUST on my frame prob. because its an Alabama truck (no snow winters=no salt on the roads=not rust) Just keep looking and you will eventually come upon a great deal. Good luck:thumbsup:

You can go to the Toyota website and there is a link somewhere on there that you can put your Vin in and it will tell you about recalls. Thats how I learned about the previous owner not doing the lower ball joint recall a few years back. Just had it done a few weeks ago.

you cant get the warranty now unless you owned the truck before a certain date. its Crap but they had to change the rules because people were buying up junk yards.

This is what I heard from my Local dealer. Might want to check in to it guys...
