The whole '1st gen', 2nd gen' thing refers to the Tacoma's only, i believe. Think 'Tacomaworld'.

My guess is that the 92' is a Toyota 'pick-up'.

This says what most of us probably felt was the case about the 'Tacoma' starting from 95' on.

    http://www.edmunds.com/toyota/tacoma/history.html

I had an 87 'pick-up' they marketed as 'Black Thunder' at the time. Had a silver check mark over black.

    Hope this helps.

New Pioneer stereo, and all 4 speakers with Infinity components. Sirius satellite radio. Deckplate mod done. Door buzzer silenced forever thank God, tinted windows, vent visors, hood protector(bug guard), ceramic pads and new rotors, dechromed EVERYTHING. 2" Lift front 3" rear. Skyjacker AAL's and replacement leafs(and front spacers) from Fatbobsgarage.com. Skyjacker 7000 Hydro rear shocks, those Bilstein 5100 fronts are coming soon!
Yep anything 95 down is the pickup. Or Hilux. Still the best pickups in the world!!!

Pre-1995.5 pickups (variously labeled 'Toyota Truck' or 'Toyota Pickup') are often referred to as 'PreTacos'.

Many Toyota-related offroad sites (e.g., Tacoma Territory; YotaTech) offer sections dedicated to the earlier pickups.

There's also ToyotaMinis.com, which is an entire forum dedicated to the pre-1995.5 Toyota small pickups.

I had Toyota pickups before Toyota even made 4x4 pickups. Yeah, I'm only 46 (which may seam old to most of you), but my 1st vehical when I was 16 was a 1972 Toyota pickup. It was 2wd, like I said, Toyota didn't make 4x4's (pickups) back then. It had an 18RC engine, and it was a stick. I don't think they even made auto trans either, but not sure. My Dad bought that truck new, and It became mine when I turned 16. I raced Motocross back then, so this was the best thing to have for hauling my bikes around to the track. Anyway, when I sold that truck for a Toyota 4x4 pickup, that 1972 truck had 300k+ miles on it, with no major work done to it, and it was still running strong. I do "think" that 72 was a Hilux though. But just not marked or logoed anywhere on the body of the truck. I know for sure my mid 1980's 4x4 Toyota's where Hilux's.

Due to those old Toyota truck's I've owned, is why I went back to 4 cyl Toyota's. Since those days I've owned a LOT of different trucks and SUV's. Mostly American made, and as much as I hate to say it, American made = Total Junk. ALL of them where major POS. They all started having "major" issues at around 100k miles. That being my experience, I had no problem spending $7,000 on a 2000 Tacoma with 145k miles on it for my main everyday driver. I passed up a few 6 cyl trucks and held out for a 4 cyl. I know they are bullet proof. Now I'm happy again...;)
