Ok, does anyone use a Low budget low cost bike rack system.

    I found this http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/bikerack/makerack.htm
This is $20 that is fine, i just need to make new measurment for a taco.

But i was wondering if there is something simpler.
Like using Wood and Tie down straps.
Or heck maybe just tie down straps will work.

I just need to have 2 bike stay in place.
I rather not lay them down for longer trips.
They will not be over night.

I am almost willing to Drill holes and mount wood piece to hold the wheels in place and use Tie downs keep the bike from mvoing at all.

Ijust do not want to reinvent the wheel if you know what I mean.

Yakima makes a bracket that a bike rests on...

Of course that thingy costs $80 bucks... I've seen someone at school that has one of those mounted to the top of their toolbox. You might could rig something similar.

    Thank all for the help.
yeah $80 and $120 is out of the question....

i saw the Fork mounted ones. I am just not a huge fan of removing the tires.
My brakes always seem to get screwed up after that happens.
But maybe i just need to talk with the bike show to have them show me what i am doing wrong. As I can find those Fork mounts for $14 each.

    Please keep the ideas coming....

I am being cheap, but that is becuase money is not growing on trees.
Both bikes are used from Craigslist and well that sorta shows you how cheap i have to be.

OEM roof rack, Shorty antenna (eBay), soft tonneau cover, K&N drop in air filter, bed mat, interior LED lights, 5100's, MT tires to come soon!!!
I have recently gotten into mountain biking and am having the same probably/question. I have thought about building something exactly like the link you posted in the first post but I would probably build it out of steel tubing. but no matter how I strap mine bikes down they always seem to fall over.

And I agree with ubermx about the take the front tire off. Seems like alot of trouble when you could just rig up something cheaper and easier.

So my thought have been something that fits snugly in between the wheel wells that you slide the front or rear tire into and then just strap them down!

Keep in mind those Yakima and Thule racks lock, so if you stop somewhere and leave the truck for a while, your pretty safe against theft. Although, you could run a cable type lock through the hooks and the bikes...;)

Did you get something yet? I just started to make a rack for my bikes tonight. I bought a piece of 1" steel square tubing from home depot, cut it to 57.5" long. Then Took the two tie down hooks off near the cab side, used an angle grinder to grind the inside of the tie down hooks so that the tubing would fit. Then bolted the tie down hooks back in. It fits like a glove, and wont interfere with any thing I haul in the bed. I just ordered a couple of fork mounts (hollywood mounts, $6 each on Amazon), then I have a can of that "bed liner" spray that I'll shoot on it to keep it from rusting, and to make it look like part of the bed. Total cost for the rack will be $30. I'll post pictures once the fork mounts arrive.

I'm referring to the one on the utahmountainbiking.com. My boys and I race downhill. Our bikes have thru axles so I needed a rack that would accept up to 2.7 downhill tires. I used to have an F150. When I got my Taco it wouldn't fit at the front of the truck and my truck is a shortbed so the bikes wouldn't fit either. I found I could drop the tailgate and strap the PVC rack to the tailgat using the D rings that are near the back of the bed. I just put the rear tire of the bikes in the rack with the bikes facing forward. It works great. The only problem is that I can no longer take my tent trailer to the races because I can't tow it with the tailgate down so we have to get a hotel or condo or tent it.

    1. It is very easy to build. I made mine in about a half hour.
    2. It has lasted for six years. I have had to re-glue one of the connections but other than that it has lasted.
If you make it, be sure to make the tire spaces appropriate for the tires you will be using. We run mostly 2.5 downhill tires. If I put my wifes bike in I have to strap it in or it is too lose and will move around. My rack is snug at 2.5 and will take up to a 2.7. I can fit 4 downhill bikes in my truck with this rack.

Fork mounts will be on top of the steel bar, then I'll spray the bar and tie down hooks with rattle can "bedliner". $ 30 total for the rack
