hey all. posted this on TTORA and hope to get some inputs here as well.

i've been doing ALOT of research on this topic (Prerunner >>> 4wd) and learning ALOT and still more to learn.

    well, another question......

i have stock 4.10s in the rear. while wanting to try and get 4.10s in the front, is it okay for me to get 3.91s in the front and 4.10s in the rear???

is it that much of a difference and will cause damage, since it's mainly for the snow and off-roading???

the reason while i'm asking is because there is a killer deal here (locally) from a guy who just did the SAS on his rig and i'm getting mixed results from "searching". pretty much cut up his IFS, which is what i'm after.......everything......manual hubs and all.

truck is a 2001 Taco Prerunner V6 auto.

    thanks.

If the deale ris good and you can spend another #150 to $400 on the right gear, then you are golden.

Talk with a shop that can install gears for you and see what the real cost is.

posted this on TTORA as well.

    learning here still, question:

can i "mix and match" the front diff and transfer case?

example: can i use a "non-ADD" transfer case and bolt that to an "ADD" front diff? or do i have to go all ADD or non-ADD?

i'm asking because there is a "non-ADD" i can get here locally. upon the "extensive" research i've been doing, the "non-ADD" front diffs are more desired. is this true too for the transfer cases?

i'm assuming that if this is possible, then the setup would be like this:

ADD front diff with "non-ADD" transfer case with manual hubs???

    thanks.

#1 - you must have the same gears front & rear. Don't skimp on something like that or else it'll bite you in the ass later.

Not sure what you mean by a NON ADD transfer case?

Are you referring to the differences between manual & electronic engagement of the t-case?

I would say, NO...you can't have a manually engaged t-case with an ADD front diff or vic-versa unless you electronically set it up properly.

For ease of installation & less complications - you're better off going with everything MANUALLY. A manually (non ADD) engaged t-case with a standard t-case (NON-ADD) and manual hubs.

yes, i meant the manual engagement and not the electronic engaged t-case.

    hmmmm......so i can't do this then huh?

manually engaged t-case >>> mated to an ADD front diff >>> with front manual hub/knuckles???

i ask this because the ADD front diffs are more common. i have my hands on a "non-ADD" aka manual engagement t-case.

just need to know if this works? thanks all.

Don't quote me on any of that because I don't know for sure.

On my 96 tacoma - I had a manually engaged t-case but I had ADD front setup (no manual hubs) -from factory. Obviously you can make it work..... but.... There are electrical & vacuum (?) related items in there that make it more complicated. Once the t-case is in 4WD, something has to 'sense' its in 4WD and send signals to something else ???? that'll engage the front diff. From what I understand, it's vacuum related which the vacuum comes from the engine itself.

So, if all this is new to you....you're probably better off finding a non-ADD front diff (and axle shaft setup) with manual hubs (all as a unit) - and avoid all that vacuum & electrical stuff completely.

Unless of course, you enjoy researching and the challenge of doing it? Go 4 It.
