heres the skinny. I noticed this morning after work that my engine felt weird and didnt pinpoint it until I got on the freeway. This only happens in 4th and 5th gear (I have a 5 speed), Whenever I step on the gas not flooring it but giving it some juice, once my RPMs reach between 2500 and 3000 its like it slips out of gear and revs way up to 5000. I can smell something that smells like burning clutch whenever it happens. Its not sparatic its everytime I try to speed up in 4th and 5th. all the lower gears are fine and 4th and 5th are fine as long as I just cruise around 2k rpms... Please I need guidance.

Does the stickshift pop out of gear, or do you just get the revs but the stick is still solidly engaged?

On my old 93, there is a urethane or rubber ball at the base of the stickshift that disintegrates after about 100k miles. Mine would just "fall out" of 3rd gear, but I never smelled anything like you did. I don'tknow if this is the same for your truck, but if so, this is about a $14 part and an easy 1/2 hour job from inside the cab.

I just bought aused 2001 Tacoma, so i am new to the truck, but I my guess is that they are the same up until 2nd gen.

    Good luck. That sucks.

no my stick stays put. its just that it revs way up. damn. Iv had a squeeking coming from my clutch for about a year now that people have said is probably the throw out bearing. does that have any importance to this issue?

The same thing is happening on my truck too, but only in 4th gear. Does this really call for a new clutch:(?
