I am at 81000 now. I have made arrangements with my mechanic to replace mine after hours as soon as we get the chance. The book says it is a 3 hour job. We are replacing the water pump at the same time while it is apart.

^ Just goes to show how long the belts least.

I'm a mechanic and we have to recommend that the customer follows the set intervals but it's really up to them. It is really your choice and if you're a risk taker. To be honest, I've never seen a Toyota iming belt break; I've seen many other manufacturers break though. The awesome thing is that AFAIK, ALL Toyota timing belt driven motors are a non-interference design. So if the belt breaks, no engine damage will result, ie. belt valves etc. In actuality, the worst that will happen is you get stuck somewhere and have to call a tow truck. Now this is how you gauge when you want the t-belt to be replaced, how much you do not want this to happen. For example, my beater car is an 88 Corolla which I don't even know if the timing belt was done or not. But I really don't care because I pretty much only drive to and from work and if it breaks then I'll just call a tow truck. It's a risk I'm willing to take, but every situation is different.

Not sure, he swears his garage is heated, but I don't know that i trust him that much. I don't work well in the cold.

Tell ya what, if you and him install the lift and bumper, I will do your timing belt. Should be done about the same time.

Shit, the lift and bumper are easy! Start spraying those bolts now, I bet that you have a few frozen ones, especially the front leaf spring bolts.

That sounded like a deal. Timing belts are wicked easy as well. I had my second one done in about 4 hours. It was also in a T-100 with a bit more room.

Just sold my 2000 tacoma, had 215k miles and still running on original timing belt. Best truck i ever owned, sold me on tacomas so went out last month and bought 2010 dc trd....to bad i wrecked it last night....still had dealer plates on it. Luckily i do autobody work and will get it back on the road soon but still sucks.

Where are you located OP. See if you can have someone help you. I payed 330 at the dealership when I first bought the truck. 103,000. I had this crazy idea that only the dealership was gonna work on the truck. I'm gonna do my own next time.
