I drove a ranger for a while. I think they are very reliable just like a tacoma. I would definitely not base my opinion on gas milage because everyone gets something different. No one here is going to give a unbiased opinion. BUT, I just bought a tacoma after needing something to pull my boat. I bought the sport model, no rear locker but I put my 2200lb (dry) boat in and out of the water all day no problem. I think tacomas are gonna cost you more but i think they have a much higher respect as far as friends go. But if your friends base you off your vehicle i suggest getting new friends. But do that after you find a truck.

I have a 2000 prerunner with a limited slip rear diff, and I've takin it more places than most four wheel drive trucks I've owned. Most reliable truck I've ever owned, and that list includes an f 150 and a ranger, both of which had major issues on a regular basis. I've also made 5 trips from alaska to idaho. Get the toyota man

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
locks the rear axle so both wheels turn at the same time (have power applied). Used when in a limited traction situation.

The things required to pull bitches
My 3.4 Tacoma with 31, could pull away my friends buddy's 3.0 ranger with 28.

Now with 33's its Neck To Neck. Imagine what its like if he had 33.
