Question PreRunner vs EDGE

Hi. I joined up to get some input from Tacoma owners. I'm trying to decide between a used Ranger or Tacoma. It feels a little silly asking Tacoma owners for an opinion, but thought it is worth a try.

I really don't need a 4X4 very often, but pulling a boat up the ramp, you need something extra. I have been looking at the Ford EDGE and the Tacoma PreRunner. I would really like a manual, but they are hard to find (and doesn't look like they are available in the PreRunner). I thought all PreRunner's came with a rear locker, but the one I drove today didn't (2001, V6). Here is the thread to the truck (hopefully it works):

http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...e&aff=national

Pros and Cons of the Tacoma vs Ranger? Not all PreRunners have a rear locker? If not, are they available after market?

Thanks

I personally dont have any experience with an edge so I cannot comment in that regard. However the answer to your tacoma model questions:

TRD Off road package comes with a Locking differential
TRD sport comes with a Mechanical Limited Slip (At least 05-08)
'09 and '10s might have computerized Limited Slip but someone will have to confirm that

Tacoma's with the TRD Offroad package came with a factory e-locker. ARB makes an excellent air locker the the Tacoma. You can get a manual PreRunner, but you will get better gas mileage with the automatic transmission.

What are you basing the gas mileage comment on?

Manuals have always gotten better mileage from what I've seen/heard/read

My cousin has a Ford Ranger and I have a 99 Toyota Tacoma. I haven't really driven his a lot, but he has driven mine. He likes it a lot. The TRD Off Road package includes the locker.

Second gen autos get better mpg than the Manuals due to a slightly taller top gear.

Nope. The first gens are all a 4 speed auto. I think a few guys put a manual in them, but they didnt come like that from the factory.

I have a 2001 PreRunner (2.7L Auto) with 182,000km. I bought it new. Runs like a Swiss watch. We have three 2009 Ford Rangers in our fleet at work (all leased) and I drive them regularly (when they're not in the shop). So far the Ford's have been in for rear door not closing (hinges replaced); air conditioning not working (fixed under warranty); no start (short that drained battery, fixed under warranty) ; broken wiper arm ; driver side door not closing properly (hinges adjusted under warranty); tail lights not working (harness replaced). No more Ford for us. Even though much of the work was under warranty, we were short a vehicle every time one went in for repair. Everyone avoids signing them out and opts for the lone Toyota Matrix we have (no problems with it btw). Just sayin'.

I had a 2004 EDGE before I bought my Tacoma. The EDGE was a great little truck.

(SAS and tons of other shit)

But still, if you are looking for something long term, I say go with a Tacoma.

Not all TRDs have lockers in the rear FYI. All V6's do, but some of the I4's dont. I forget which ones exactly. Enola where are ya haha.

I had a 99 Ranger Sport with the 4 cylinder. I loved the truck. I drove it to West Virginia from California and back with no problem. I also love my 91 Toyota 4x4 sr5. I'd just look for all the features you want in a truck.
