was wondering what toyota was doing with all the first gens that have been bought back due to frame rust. are they scrapping them, or is it possible to purchase one, obviously in as-is condition, for either parts or project of some sort?

they replace the frame, and give the truck back to the customer.

Then i assume they just recycle the used frame.

my mistake...the OP initially asked about the bought back ones

you cannot buy the doomed ones...if you know someone...you MAY be able to score some parts

95.5-00 (and a few early initial 01s) were bought back typically at 1.5x KBB value for excellent condition...regardless...if you owned it less than 6 months or didnt own it when the buyback was announced...they were bought back at KBB value (IIRC)

toyota then added 01-04s to the program...but only in certain states...and after inspection, the frame may be repaired or replaced

I wonder if there's any luck trying to call the dealerships and get a 3.4L motor from one before they scrap it. I would love to rebuild one for when mine kicks the bucket. They should be cheap to buy anyway seeing as how many there are now. A supercharger would be awesome. I've been keeping my eyes open for a used one around $1000. I'm wanna get one by spring.

Not going to happen. Every truck must be able to drive itself onto the truck and then again to the crusher.

My 99 TRD was bought back and sent to the crusher. I would loved to have the brand new BFG AT's, and the rear 3rd member.

I figure 300,000 is a fair amount to estimate. I'll be there in a couple years.

So should I check my '99 Taco? Havent really inspected it that much but I guess I should. Would be pissed if it does have rust, cause then I would have to lift another truck and get new tires
