Rusted in Canada.....I recieved my letter from Toyota Canada today. They have decided that re-purchase is the option for me and shocked the CRAP out of me with their offer. As promised, they did indeed come back with 1.5 X (150%) the Best Black Book Retail for Excellent shape on my 98 Tacoma TRD. Of course the amounts will be different in the US, but my offer, which I will most definitely accept is $20,212.50. Folks, up here I'd be lucky to sell my lifted Taco, which is in real good shape for $9-10G's, and I can buy a 2001/2002 for about $17,000 at a dealer right now, so Toyota has DEFINITELY done right by me........Now if I can just talk them into the "Interest Free" financing on any Toyota Truck at a Toyota Dealer and we may be talking about a 2nd Generation 4-Door ???? I'll miss my 98 big time as it was my "Toy", but I think my teenagers will appreciate a bigger back seat this time around. Happy as crap and having a pint while I get set to look on-line for used Toy's........Rick

Wow, good thread guys! I had a minor accident this week, bented control arms in front ect, Called my friend who works @dealer ship
anyways he told me to look also at the frame, it is perforated inner side between gas tank and well on its way on left side also.
took pictures and sent to my friend. He says that some other client got a 19,000$ refund for his 1998 taco.
Sounds like a good downpayment on a newer taco!!
this bad luck might turn out to be not so bad after all

dealer critiria: must be able to poke a finger anywhere through frame

Thumbs up My new truck is at the dealers.

I just got back from the dealers. They called and said my new truck was in. I went in and took a look . It's real sharp, still has the factory plastic junk and real dirty, but it will look nice when they get done cleaning it up. I haven't heard from Toyota yet, so they called from the dealer and told me Toyota will call me today or monday (4/7) with the buyback details. I stopped by the area at the back of the lot where they are storing the bad frame torotas. 14 real nice looking Tacomas sitting in a row waiting to be crushed. I took a bunch of pics while I was there but my computer is messing up and I can't get them to post. I'll post the pics as soon as I figure this out.

I received a letter directly from Toyota titled "1995 - 2000 Model Year Tacoma Frame Rust Corrosion Perfromation Warranty Enhancement Notification. The letter includes the VIN number of my 1995 Tacoma. It extends the frame warranty to 15 years. My frame past inspection at the Auburn Maine dealership. The dealership did have several Tacomas which they re-purchased for Blue Book value times 1.5.

Well I just got back from the dealer.

I had dropped off my 00 4x4 and to me it didn't look to bad/

They said it failed the test.

They are offering me about 13.5K not including another 1500 or so if I buy another Toyota.

Looked at a new 4x4 Xtra cab, 5 spped with no power. 22k.

Have to really think on this one.

Dave - I've had more than a few sleepless nights over this one. The truck i'm looking at is around 26K. pretty big note to take on even with a good down payment. good luck.

Unhappy dilemma

Dave/OldTacomaGuy,

I'm in the same sh***y situation. Took my '00 SR5 4x4 up to Toyota of Newport last week. I saw the truck go up on the lift, then about 3 minutes later the tech drove it right back to where I left it...(I figured that the truck must be perfect, that's why the inspection was so short)...I was WRONG! The tech said that he could push through the frame in several places...

Should be expecting a check for $15,500 to $17,000, probably arriving within a week or two. I loved that truck (bought it three weeks ago), and I want another Tacoma - but I am only 17 and can't take out a loan.

It sucks because I am right in between making the leap for a new truck or used - the used prices are through the roof in RI!

Any suggestions......????

Here it is....last time I saw it.........

What do you mean between 15-17K? Didn't they tell you right then and there?

Also I don't understand how they could make any deal with you as you are only 17.

Try and find a used Taco ANYWHERE. 4x4 used are impossible to find. Heh, channel 10 just had a thing on about the recall, first I have heard about it.

I looked at a 04 Xtr cab today. They want like 14 or 15.5 for it. It was a auto, just didn't appeal to me, I' m def going for a new one.

Specifics

Dave.

It's going to be done through my parents, as far as I know. I haven't gotten a 'exact' number from the dealership (Newport) all that they told me was that there numbers showed $16,000.00, however they told me to expect anywhere from $15,000 to $17,000 from Toyota corporate. How's the process work...should I expect a phone call from Toyota soon.

Also, where was that '04 extra cab - I have been calling all over - the prices have all been through the roof - maybe PM me the details...if you don't mind?

The salesman said that they notify Toyota and then someone would contact me. Since you are 17, what did they do about giving you something else to drive?

I saw a 2005 tacoma at Charle Toyota in Norwich (about 45 mins from you) It was an extended cab, 5 speed, 4 cyl, 4WD about 38000 miles. It came in while I was at the dealer. A lady had just traded it in. It looked pretty nice. They want 18,500 for it. Just something to think about.
Good luck with whatever you decide. By the way, it's really a shame about your truck, it really looks like a nice one. My 97 looked just as nice but its junk underneath.

The one I'm looking at at Belize is the same specs, 08 but only like 21k.

hey, i just heard about this yesterday, i got a 96 taco that i just bought right before winter. there quite a bit of surface rust on my truck, the only hole i noticed when i quickly just looked under the bed was that there was a hole in the plate that protects the gas tank. i also have some rust on my bumper and on the side of my truck. but do any of you know if this deal is JUST for rust on the frame or rust in general?

It's on frame only, if it's got a hole in it. Usually just over top of front leaf bracket on the inside of frame. If the frame is ok they'll extend the warranty until your truck has 15 years

It's just for the frame but from what the mechanic told me, if you have rust in the bed, 95% chance that your frame is rusted in places that you would never be able to see.

Have it checked.

I also have a 95 (and a 05) Taco. I am going home to look at the frame now. This will hurt pretty bad if mine is rusty. I bought this new in Jan 96 off the lot. This is my baby.. 264K and running strong with minor repairs.. Original clutch was replaced at 250K....
Was built at the old GM plant Nummi in Cali....

Crossing my fingers now.
