doesnt matter what the outside looks like...they use a hammer to test the inside...if holes are busted into the frame in certain spots with the hammer test...i think it fails

The main test spots, if you had read thru this thread, are up at the front.

The shock tower area is the weakest point.

My frame from there back was fine but it failed the most important test area.

They test everywhere but the main place that you can't see is the towers.

Just had my 2003 Tacoma checked at the local dealer and it passed the frame inspection! The only thing is they don't have the info yet on coating the interior of the frame.
Right now they are telling me to bring it back yearly to get inspected.

IIRC the dealers won't coat the inside of the frame, just the exterior.

In Canada, my toyota dealer is going to undercoat the outside of frame and apply waxy coating to the inside ? They need about 5 hours to complete the job.

I have an 01 and was wondering if it cost anything to have the dealer inspect it.

No it doesn't cost anything but your time.

Do you have to be the original owner...? Does the free inspection apply to a second hand owner?

You do not have to be the original owner. I was not. Hell, you can be third or forth hand. It applies to the current owner (registered/titled to) of the truck.

Frame recall

I took the Tacoma ('02) to the dealer for a quickie oil change and when they were done they said : you wanna leave the keys so we can swap out the frame? I thought he was pulling my leg but unfortunately it didn't pass the test. Naturally they didn't have any trucks left in the rental fleet so I'm driving a Camry for few weeks. I wouldn't think it would make economic sense to swap the frame and put me in a rental for the duration, but that's the deal.

At least you got to keep your truck man.

maybe it doesnt make economic sense short term...but by standing behind their products and fixing problems like this and going above and beyond what other companies would do...im quite sure that toyota has made quite a few customers foor life that will now in turn buy their children toyotas etc
