This is my 5th truck so they had me anyway. The Japanese manufacturers always go the extra mile IMHO. I worked for Honda for years and they generally didn't pinch pennies when it came to warranty work but then again it always depends on the service manager etc.

Hello,

I just got my '02 back from my dealer with a complete "new frame",plus other goodies priced in.......with only 47k on it I was surprised when they told me it would "Make the Frame " test; failed out near my passenger rear spring hanger......just starting BUT they have treated me right for 30+ years and 13+ Toyota's....

The best part;watching these "techs" treat my '02 like brand new( service called me when they pulled the cab and bed off, plus updated when the rebuild started).....new front suspension ( ball joint recall also) ,lower A's plus bushings, new rear suspension complete ,brake lines plus E-brake cables and they matched my "Net shock" prices ( only thing not covered in the "swap"),new anti-freeze;including the block, R&R A/C , cleaned and re-oiled my K&N filter and a new lock for the spare..........."Devil in the details"............PLUS gave me a Toyota for those 11 days, yes it was a Prius BUT Now Mom wants one ( 54 mpg avg )

Thumbs up

oldtacomaguy,

that is exactly what will happen......I have always traded the trucks out faithfully BUT now that Toyo has recreated this one.....200k here we come.......Moms Camry just rolled 148k and she got the "New Bug" with that Prius loaner....so we are "punishing" the dealer for a "weekend trip" once the Solar roof '10's come in .....the way I got it figured, the $$$ we save on gas mpgs with that lets me "dress" the Taco.....

Sweet. I have a 96. Barely any rust, an i am hoping it doesnt fail when i bring it in because i would only get around 7000-8000 for it, which won't buy me a newer 1st gen (really dont like 2nd gens). I also like the 96 face better and i have done a fail amount of mods. i wouldnt mind a 6 cylinder, but im happy now.

anyone know if theres an option for a frame swap no charge?

i think the whole reason for them purchasing back the 95.5-00 was because the frames for them were no longer being manufactured...

AFAIK, there is no option. Like I stated earlier, 95.5-00 buyback by Toyota, 01-04 frame swap or undercoating at the discretion of Toyota.. PERIOD.

I was at the dealer earlier today and they were working on 2 frame replacements with another failed truck waiting outside for a new frame. The service manager took me back to have a look. I saw the bed of one truck sitting on a stand and the cab was up on a lift. The old frame was being stripped on the floor with the new frame sitting right next to it. They said it is 70 hours of labor to do the frame swap. It looked to me like they were doing a real nice job. The dealer I was at is in a small city (Norwich Ct) and they have allready done 7 frame swaps. I guess here in road salt country most of the frames are failing.

Frame replacement

I'm a little piXXed off at this point, I asked the dealer, " hey what about installing a clutch since it's all apart" . After they said $1000.00 the conversation took a decidedly less friendly tack. The bloody engine and trans are out on the floor and they want $1000 bucks for a clutch???!!!
Even Porsche mechanics aren't that rude.........I'll do it myself you wankers after you're done, oh and oh by the way, it better drive as well as before you took it apart.

I think I cost somebody their truck today. Took my '97 into the dealer, and it passed. But by checking my truck, the technician thought to check another Tacoma he was doing a brake job on, and it failed. So somebody brought their truck in for brakes, and won't be getting it back again. So sad.

On another note, I just bought my truck last week and it is very clean for a '97. But living in a road salt state, I can't help but feel reluctant to do anything extra to it (lift, wheels, bedliner), because the dark cloud is constantly hanging over my head that one day the frame will eventually rust out. Does anybody else feel that way? Maybe I'll just keep bringing it to the dealer annually for the inspection, then after the frame warranty is up, if it's not rusted by that point, I'll just drive it until the damn truck breaks in half.

mbtech, why not just undercoat it yourself now if the frame is in good condition?

I think you did that person a favor. You got them out of an unsafe truck that they didn't even know was unsafe. I'm surprised the dealer was even replacing the brakes without first checking the frame. All the service depts. are aware of this problem. I'm glad yours passed, but I would treat the frame and have it inspected every year. Good luck.

I took my 98 TRD (204,000) in today and had it checked. The mechanic said it was solid as a rock... was really hoping the hammer would smash right through so I could get paid!

Where is the most common spot they say will fail one? The one I bought from my brother in law a few weeks ago, a 2000, looks like it is in ecxellent shape from front to back. The truck lived in California from 2000-2006, NJ from 2006-2009, and now here in FL since March. So I think it was spared the salt crazy areas. BUT would like to know the spots to look for.

Look above the rear leaf spring perches on the inside of the frame rails.

Yep, that's what they do. Any where along the frame for that matter. Inside rail is the thinest.
