No rust anywhere along the frame. A few surface spots, but nothing at all serious. Thankfully all that time in Cali, NJ, and FL has saved it from rusting. The frame is STRONG LIKE BULL....

For me this is very sad. I love my baby. I had jut finished paying it off, just got the title from the bank and when I got the letter last year from Toyota they were taking back the truck because as the guy at Toyota put it, used cheap metal. It passed last year but is expected to fail this this year...which is in three weeks. I am not going. I am having my parents take it because I cannot just leave it there and walk away. I will cry. I did last year. It looks like new and has very low milage and they cannot fix it. Make me sad and angry. They wont fix it because it is a 2000. I was out there in the snow and ice washing down the frame!

I am definalty buying a new one. But I am a little worried. they seem so much bigger and I am so small. I sat in one and I can reach the pedals and wheel and all ( with pillows like i do now ). What if I can't drive it? What if it IS TOO Big. I am a like 4'/8"/9"ish. I dont want a 4x2 or a car.. I really want my Baby but I still want a Tacoma 4x4. I am just scared.

Are they going to buy it back from you? If so maybe you could take the money and buy one(a generation 1 Tacoma) from a southern state like NC, SC, FL GA??? Depending on where you are? Where rust is not an issue. I was afraid to look at my frame and find a boo boo, but this frame is near perfect. Most of its life has been in CA, NJ, and FL luckily. The new ones are nice, yes, but I like the gen 1's better.

Yeah, they are going to give me 150% bluebook value and all. It was 26,000 miles on it. I like the 1st generation Tacos as well but Toyota seems like it like the new ones. My Dad said it feels like the owners have no rights. We paid for the truck and then get stuck with a new truck bill like it or not. Unfortinatly, ticomy ( my baby was called that the day I got it from a family member and it stuck ( has always lived in New England, a very salty area.

I do love the new generation. They just seem so big to me and I am afraid it will be too big for me. A coworker said not to worry I will be able to drive it like I drive this one.

The way I read it they pay you 150% of value in a check to do as you please. If you buy another "Ticomy" brand new you get an extra $1000, and a used on you get an extra $500. If it were me I would take the cash and look for another gen 1 in excellent condition. I am from MA and believe me I know what that salt does to a car/truck. If I move back up there in the next year or so I have already undercoated the crapola out of my frame from front to back.

Yeah, so you know what the salt it like. I do have some options. That is why I asked other Tacoma owners. They understand and understand about the love of the tacoma...I am surrounded by people who just want something to go from point a to point b. lol. It has been nice to have a good vehicle with no problems, besides the rust.

I must say I just went from a gen 1 to a gen 2 and it does seem a lot bigger (because it is).

I loved my gen 1 and I love my gen 2 as well. Low mileage gen 1 are HARD to find!

If you are concerned about it being too big, my advice would be to test drive the heck out of a gen 2 or maybe even ask for an overnight rental or demo if you can find a willing dealer!

Are they harder to drive? The guy at Toyota said they are bigger but that I should be just fine with them...or maybe he is just trying to make a sale.

I do really want to stay with the Tacoma. I do love it. I am just really scared, mine just fits me so well.

Harder to drive? Not at all.

Well...Parking...I went from an extended cab gen 1 TRD to a double cab long bed TRD Sport gen 2 so I am a little parking challenged right now, but I feel just as comfortable driving the gen 2 as I did the gen 1.

Best of luck in whatever you decide.

Good to know. I want basically what I have now only off road now. My truck looks and has the suspension of off road...even the Toyota guy said it. I would prefer access not double but if I get double fine.

Thank you to all who have taken the time read and for everyones advice. It is nice to meet and talk to other Tacoma owners and those who have goen through the same thing. it is very helpful.

So how did they fix the frames for the 2001 model year? Thicker steel? And it is really "fixed" at all, or do they rot out just like the older ones? Maybe the recall will eventually be extended to cover all the first-gens once the '01-'04s get a little older.

Same frames, they are just coated and protected better.

Frames on my 2001 are box tube style which rot from the inside out. Frames on the new Tacoma that I looked at this week are "C" channel shaped and totally different.

tore off rear bumper and started new tube one.

My Tacoma went for inspection today. It went Monday but because it was not a year to the date they would do it. So it went today. Last year the mechanic told me, one more year. Start looking to replace it. So I have done my research and made a list of what I wanted. Today, it went for inspection and the mechanic said the frame is still very solid..probably be fine next year too just keeping coming back till it fails. Totally different answers. But My Tacomy is fine for this year. Thanks so all for your answers and responses. It is so nice to have a place to come and meet other Tacoma owners who have gone through this or are going through this and who love thier trucks. I will post a picture of my Baby.
