UPDATE: I went to the local toyota dealer and talked to a real good friend of mine who is a technician there and i mentioned the frame inspection to him I told him i would rather get a new frame like the 01-04 than get mine recalled. He said that although that proble wont happen, toyota is now undercoating all of the frames that pass for free! He told me to schedule an appt next week.

cliffs notes: If the rust inspection passes, i was told that you now qualify for a free rustproofing undercoat.

So go to your dealer and ask about it.

rust questions...

has anybody who purchased a tacoma recently dealt with a dealer regarding the rust issue? i heard about the recall before i got a tacoma, and then found one in great shape last december. i thought that if it rusted out i would be able to get some money for it and essentially break even, but then i heard that toyota only offers the buyback option for people that have owned the trucks since before they started buying them back. anybody know about this?

Benny, IIRC, you need to have owned the truck for at least a year before Toyota will buyback the truck if it fails inspection.

you do not have to own your truck for any time period. IT DOES NOT MATTER. Mine was all set up to get bought back and i even had a rental for a week and then toyota realized i had a rebuilt title so they gave it back, sucks for me but my point is i only owned my truck for 3 weeks before they "took it into custody". Hope this helps!

Thumbs up

Benny,

sorry if I missed it BUT what year is the Taco???

the newer recalls replace the frame not the truck.....I know my '02 is re-framed....and as far as inspections..out of four of us..2 passed and were "treated" and resealed with the "new" warranty while mine and anothers were re-framed...with the same "new" warranty..

There are options and sadly it again can come down to the "best results" depend on which dealer you use ...

Snoope back quiet

mine is a '99. right before i bought it, i called a local dealer and asked about it, and he told me they were only offering the 150% buyback to people who had owned the truck since march 2007 because lots of people took advantage and bought crappy old rusty ones and made lots of money. i don't want to trade mine in yet, but i'd be psyched to get some money for later.

WTF,

Grab my mail today and in it I have another letter from Toyota asking why I have NOT had the Service campaign completed.....?????
The letter is an upgrade to my previous one BUT one would think once the "Dealer" put my VIN# into the system this would NOT happen...
This is now a "Buy back".no thank you......

I'll be talking to a certain service director in the AM Friday and correcting a few things....and KEEPING my '02 Tacoma

The only buy backs were on the 95-00 models.

All the rest had their frames replaced. This is because the frames for the newer models are still available.

It hasn't been that way Janster.

95.5 - 00's = buyback

01-04 = frame replacement

I just got off the phone with my "Service director" and she was confused also BUT she did say I am keeping my Tacoma...( DUH).
She was not aware of the "NEW" letter BUT my frame replacement is in the system....
This letter came from Corporate and she thinks they "Missed" something....To get a "New Frame" released they need to "Process" the VIN....

The letter goes into 3rd class file and My Tacoma stays in my driveway.....

Snoope
