I have an 01 Pre Runner that I purchased in April '08. I have registered the vehicle with the Toyota website, but have never received any information on the buyback program. Is there somewhere else that the vehicle has to be registered in order to get this letter?

01's aren't being bought back. Just go to the dealership and see what's up.

I think it depends on the area you live in, I know that those in the north-east are getting letters, but again, not all states or provinces...

And yes, '01's through 04's are being bought back, there is an '03 and an '04 at my local dealership waiting to go to the crusher, I'm trying to buy the wheels off one of them...

They must have run out of frames. This program has been running for over a year now. I suggest you go and talk to a dealer.

Call Toyota Customer Service #(800)331-4331

This is your best option it gives you the most direct answer, they are acceptting 01-04 tacomas, because my truck fits that category. Just ask the rep. when you call

Got mine back yesterday after a few days at the dealer, they did a pretty intense inspection on mine, sanded down what appears to be the whole frame and then checked for soft spots etc...finished it off with a sweet new undercoat, the truck looks brand new from underneath, needless to say I passed without any issues...

I was at the dealers in Connecticut yesterday and they were doing a frame replacement. I talked to the service manager about it and he tells me they've done about 20 full frame replacements and none of them have had any problems.

I stopped by the other day to check on mine, which is in pieces, the only problem is that there is a delay on the brake lines that run all the way to the back, the rest is being covered. There are however some things that are not covered, but that is just normal wear and tear, they do not charge any labor, it is just the cost of parts.

My '04 is in getting the undercoat treatment. I tried getting an FJ Cruiser for a loaner but I am having fun with the '09 Camry they gave me instead. It is actually a nice car.

I asked the service manager about the buyback when I took it in for inspection and him said they are re-framing them and a buyback is quite rare on the 2001-04s.

I took my 01 in last Saturday and they just took pictures which they then E-mailed to Toyota. Toyota responded that the frame was fine and they didn't even do any undercoating.

I think its kind of odd that they didn't even undercoat it. I thought they were at least doing that to all of them that weren't being replaced. Eh, your covered for 14 years from the build date from what I understand.

I was a little surprised by this as well. But at least if there is rust in a few years due to no undercoating it will fall back onto the dealership for not doing the service.

Mine hasn't been undercoated either. I am told the state (MA) I live in hasn't approved the process.

My truck is registered in New York, so I don't know why they wouldn't go ahead and apply the undercoating.

Just dropped off my 02 Tacoma and it failed. Looks like a new frame and it's going to take 3 weeks. Are you guys saying that I may still be charged for things like rusted brakelines, hoses.etc??

I am a little confused. I am new to this link, recently you hear that Toyota has placed a recall on certain year Tundra's for the rust issue. This is the first I have heard about the Tacoma. I have read the link below and it mentions the 95-00' models. Now if you go back further I have read somebody with a 01' received the buy back. Have they extended the years? I have a 04' and what I can tell, living in NY i have the normal frame rust. I would like to make sure it is nothing serious?

My two questions are:

1) Has toyota extended the years on the tacoma>

2) Does the dealer do a free rust check?

Thanks.

tbell5,

you have 2 options..
1) call your local Toyota dealer and ask about a "frame inspection" or
2) Call Toyota at 1-888-270-9371 and have your 17 digit VIN# available

Either one should give you your answer..
