95-2K rust help from toyota

http://blog.toyota.com/2008/03/living-up-to-ou.html

if you have more than "normal rust of the frame" you might want to contact them. they will either repair or repurchase it .

you might have to go back to the march 08 and scroll down to find the info !
or here it is also

Rust, as they say, never sleeps. It certainly never sleeps in the states where road salt is in heavy use, and we’ve recently become aware of additional evidence of that fact.
We’ve received reports that on a small number of model-year 1995 to 2000 Tacomas, excessive corrosion of the frame has caused perforation of the metal. The reason for this, it appears, is that the frames of some of the 813,000 vehicles built during this time-frame may not have adequate corrosion protection.
As a result, when they’re exposed to severe environmental conditions, especially in states where salt is used for the de-icing of roads, these frames may develop corrosion that goes beyond the normal surface rust that’s commonly found on metal after years of exposure – and in this case, these trucks are from eight to 13 years old.

Because of our oft-stated commitment to standing behind our products, we’re extending the rust-perforation warranty covering these trucks for a period of 15 years from each vehicle’s original date of purchase, with no mileage limitation, for corrosion damage that results in perforation of the vehicle’s frame material. Owners of these Tacomas need not be the original owners. Even if you bought your Tacoma second- or third-hand, it’s covered by this extended warranty.
Here’s how this will work: Starting in the middle of March and continuing over a period of time, owners of 1995-2000 Tacomas will be sent letters informing them about this issue. If you find rust perforation on your vehicle's frame, have your truck inspected by a Toyota dealer.
If frame corrosion damage is confirmed by an inspection at a Toyota dealership, at Toyota's option, we will either repair the vehicle or repurchase it. No matter the vehicle’s actual condition, it will be valued as a vehicle in excellent condition. If the inspection reveals no rust perforation, the 15-year warranty will remain in force.
This is worth underscoring: This is not a recall. Rather, it’s an example of our commitment to the durability of our products and to our owners. These are older trucks and rust is a fact of life, especially where road salt is used, but that’s not what’s important. What’s important is that we take care of our owners. We just thought you should know that.

First post...

This is a pretty incredible offer. I have always thought my 95 taco had a lot of rust on the belly. I wish they had example pictures of what is considered "significant" rusting. Regardless, I'll probably head to the toyota dealer when I get time. Thanks for this.

I talked to the head mechanic at Gene Reed Toyota in North Charleston and they are going to take photos of my frame tomorrow and send them up to the regional manager. I love my truck but I would take full value for it as a nice down payment on a 08.

97 frame rust!!!!!

I just got back from my dealer in RI. I had gone ther to look at a new truck. When they looked at my 97 ex. cab 4wd, the said there was a problem with inferior steel delivered to their site in California. They offered me RETAIL PLUS 150%, AND ANOTHER 1000 ON TOP OF THAT. That would mean my 97 with 178000 miles on it will get me 12000 in trade. Word is they want the bad frames off the street and are going to have them crushed. They are also removing all of my stereo equipment for no charge. I also got a new Rav 4 to drive for 30 days at no charge while I decide what to do.
I'm still a bit stunned.

Did you need to bring in any type of paperwork to do that process?

The dealer said Toyota had sent paperwork out, but I just happened to show up looking before it arrived at mt house. If you have one of these trucks, you should be getting notified any day now.

What dealer in RI did that? Did you get the letter from Toyo first?

I just got a call from the dealer I have done business with and they told me about it but I haven't received a letter as yet.

It was Balise Toyota in Warwick by the airport. I showed up not knowing about the rust problem, just kind of looking around because my truck was 11 years old. I had no paperwork, and still don't for that matter. They told me a Toyota rep would be in touch with me to negotiate a final buy back price for the truck. I have several thousand dollars worth of srereo equipment that needs to be removed from my 97 and put into whatever I buy. There is also a trailer hitch and wiring on my old one, but not the one I am looking at on the lot. I'm going to ask Toyota if they will take of those expenses for me before I settle on a final buy back price. They have been EXTREMELY reasonable with me so far. Good luck

Nice. Balise called me yesterday and left me a message about this. I live right near the airport and that's who I have dealt with in the past. How bad was your truck?

They said they could poke a hole in the frame from about the rear axle back. What will you upgrade to? I'm looking at a sr-5 extended cab with the v6 and the six speed. Still negotiating the best deal, and haven't decided on a color yet. I'm waiting for the Toyota reps to get in touch with me.

Not sure what I would do if they offer to buy it. I'd like to get the SR-5 as well as I want the extended cab in this one. What was their starting price on that one?

Mine has what I consider a lot of rust, don't know if they will think the same. Its a 2000 and theres no way, imho, that the frame will last more than a few years more. The truck originally came from NH and they use even more salt than we do here. The guy never really washed underneath, not even sure if that would have mattered. There's a couple of points where the bed has started to rot thru because it is sitting on a rotten part of the frame.

Still no letter from Toyo but I might drive over to Belise tomorrow, I can walk home it's that close.

Strange thing is I just changed the exhaust a few weeks ago and was looking at the frame, saying what a shame it was that the engine will probably well outlast the frame.

Funny how some things work out!

Just bought a 2000 Tacoma SR5 for $8900 from a guy down the road from me. KBB was/is $10,000...the truck bounced around from VT to RI.

...Should I plan on getting a (newer) Taco with my refund - (if I qualify)?

Going to Valenti in Westerly to get it checked out....either way it's a win/win - I already love this truck after a few weeks.

Thanks,
jake

Broken Frame in Canada

Hi folks. I'm new to the forum and found you through the Toyota Open Blog, but I'm not new to Toyota. I had an 83 4x4 SR5 I bought new in 83 and traded it on my 1st-Gen '98 TRD. My "Pride-n-Joy" sits at the Dealer with a broken Frame above the Passenger Rear Tire. I haven't received a letter from Toyota Canada yet, but the dealer has rented me a Camry for 30-days while they figure out what to do with my truck. Chances are it will qualify for the Buy-Back option as the rest of the frame looks like it's going real soon.

I'm waiting to hear details of the buy-back yet. I hope that they consider financial rewards to keep me in a Toyota again. I've based my financial decisions on the longevity of Toyota trucks, and just bought a new Harley 6 weeks ago, expecting my truck to last at least another 5 years.

If Toyota can't give me an Interest-Free loan on a used Toyota Truck at wholesale costs, 2001 or newer, then I likely won't be able to afford to replace my current truck with anything but a used Chev,Ford or Dodge! I've been making fun of all my buds' american metal for 25 years, and I'll be the laughing stock of all of them if Toyota can't help me more than they already are.

This is for Dave looking for a price. The extended cab V-6 with the SR-5#2 package lists around 25000 with the 6 speed. About 2000 more for the automatic. The SR-5 gives you power windows and mirrors, chrome front grill and rear bumber, upgraded seat fabric and cruise control.

Well, I was at the dealer today and ordered my new truck. I got the extracab V6 4WD with the automatic, impulse red with the grey interior. On the way out, I passed my old truck sitting in the back of the lot. It still looked as good as the day I got it 11 years ago. I took some pics and will post them together with the new one after I get it. Toyota really stepped up with the frame rust issue. I basically got my new truck for 1/2 price. I'm actually kind of sad to have to get rid of my old truck, it was by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. I put 176000 absolutely trouble free miles on it. It is going to the boneyard with its original exhaust, clutch, radiator, etc, etc. I'm sure it would have gone 250000 plus. Don't get me wrong - I'm very excited about my new truck but at the same time will miss the old one. Now for the fun stuff like window tint and a real nice sound system. I'll keep posting.
Dave
