So, I had a 3 hour drive today, which included some LONG steep grades, and I started thinking about the gearing in my 01.

    from 3rd to 4th, there is a 1000rpm change, but from 4th to 5th it's only about 500rpm...

It's annoying to climbing hills, because I have to go either 50mph in 3r gear, which is too slow when your trying to get somewhere, or I have to try and get up to 70mph and get into 4th gear at 3000rpm and I still have to give it a lot of gas.

then when I'm on the flats, I can only go 80mph because thats 3000rpm and I don't wanna run the poor thing way up in the rpm's

To me it wold make more sense if it was about 700rpm from 3rd to 4th, and 800rpm from 4th to 5th, that would give me a better rpm at higher speeds, and give me better climbing abilities..

this is with stock gears, on 265 75 16's

(I don't need to hear anyone telling me I drive to fast, please)

i really cant help much because mine is a automatic.. i just press the gas harder lol but mine is a v6 too and i usually only have problems goin up hill pullin a heavy duty trailer with somethin on it. have you changed your filter and plugs lately? youll lose alot of power if your plugs and filter get dirty..

it's not power, the truck hauls ass, it's just weird gearing. I do need an air filter, but it's just always been this way

if it is not pulling like you want it too then gears are gonna help, they will cut down on your gas mileage but im guessin that you have the 3:73 gears since it is an 01 im not sure and correct me if im wrong, im puttin 4:10's or 4:56's in mine eventually but thats because im still goin up tire sizes and puttin bumpers and stuff and all the extra weight that ill have and i still want to be able to pull hard and move when i need to.. you can try gears, but there may be a cheaper way and a easier way to do it if somebody else has any ideas.

yea I'm not sure which gears I had, i thought I had 4:10's stock?

But then I will have to be at an even higher rpm... and I don't want that

as far as i know only the 4 bangers come with 4:10's i think the v6 comes with 3:73's but mine is only a sr5 the trd off road may be different.. im sure somebody else knows more than i do about the off roads

hmm, well we'll see, with 4:10's wouldn't that meant I'd have to be at a higher rpm going the same speed? yea it'd pull nicer, but then on flat highway it would SUCK

Essentially, higher gear ratios = more torque at a given RPM in that gear, but top speed becomes rev limited sooner + gas mileage suffers.

I don't think your issue is the final drive ratio but the space between your next to last gear and your last. Every vehicle has to deal with this in some situations, though the more gears you have the less of a problem it is (which is why that new Lexus Toyota is pimping has a fucking 8-speed transmission in it).

yea your rpm's will be higher, you will lose a little gas mileage and maybe a couple miles off top speed, which ive had mine at 120 before, it didnt shut off. and im not gonna do it again it floats in the rear so i dont think that would be a problem but the speedometer will be wrong but thats already wrong after tires have been upsized

I don't think that changing the final drive gear is going to change the jumps between gears (like you said a 500rpm change between 4th and 5th...but double that between 3rd and 4th). That is set more by the transmission gearing.
You sound like you are in a weird place- You are going to lose out somewhere when you change gears. If you like how it rides on the flats then deal with the weird highway climbing properties- or you are going to change how to handles on the flats to get better performance on the climbs.

Most of the time messing with the gear ratios when you have stock or near stock tires isn't really all that much of a gain for the price...cause any gear job I've ever heard was in the 1500 to 2K range for price...

And why go over 80 neways??

yea sounds like there isn't much I can do, oh well! maybe I'll go with 285's next instead of 265's so I get a little bit better rpm at a higher speed.. I don't do those hills often, so I'd rather it be better for flat highway

Just know that you'll lose some acceleration with bigger tires...

the hemi loses alot of power in the drive train the engine may put out say 350 or 360 but only put down 300 or so to the tires, the drive train is crap my buddys mom has one and i beat it all the time especially off the line

    A hemi what?

Most of those bloated Chrylser/Dodge vehicles have a hemi because they need it to move. A co-worker of mine has a Chrysler Aspen with the big (5.7L I think?) Hemi V8 in it and I consistently smoke that thing because it's a pig. God help people who get the base v6.

The Hemi Chargers and Challengers are decent cars, but the fact that they're Dodge doesn't help their case...C/D/J vehicles just fall the hell apart after 50k...

I think all 4 cyl 2.7L came with 4:10, There are certain models of the 2.7 that had 4:30, The v6 had 4:10 if it was an Auto and 3:73 for Standard. I'm planning on going with 4:88 with mine in the future.

Other way around on the 4.0L...4.10 for manual, 3.73 for Auto.

Higher gear ratios = worse mileage....that's why the manual gets worse mileage than the autos in the V6 models.
