Griding noise shifting in/out 4WD modes

Hey guys, finally got a Tacoma.. On my 03 Tacoma, I've followed the instructions for shifting from 4Hi -> 4Lo..

Truck stopped, shifted transmission to N and then shifted from 4Hi -> N -> 4Lo.

When I hit the gate for 4Lo, I heard a horrible grinding noise... WTF?

Same thing going back to 4Hi with the truck in N.

 

I should also mention that when shifting between Lo and high, I waited at the N position for the transfer case shifter.. Could that have caused it? Should I have shifted in on swift motion?

 

Hmm my issue must be unique...

 

try it in a swift motion and see if it grinds?

 

might sound stupid, but make sure you pressed the 4wd button first.

on mine i engage 4wd as im slowing down, come to a stop throw the tranny in N then shift to 4lo and it works

 

clark: it as in 4WD..

How swift do you shift into 4Lo? I was shifting pretty slow, anticipating the grind each time.. perhaps that's why? two gears touching but not really locking together..

Also what is the effect of having the trasnfer case in N and transmission in D? truck doesn't move.. that basically disengages the center lock right?

 

I have always been told, and understood to go into low range you put the tranny in neutral on a manual, or park on an auto.

 

ywen, i just do it one swift motion, you might feel some vibration, but its jus the gears lining up.

ive always done it in N...just one click away from D

 

I'll engage my transfer from 2H to 4H "on the fly" But I always come to a stop before I go from 4H to 4L. It may be a "SYNCRHO" thing,remember that sychro's in manual trans is what allows smooth shifting (upshift & down shift) Doudt there are any in an auto but the transfer case almost surely has a few sychros in it , although there may not be any at all on the 4lo side of the gear box..........
