I was just greasing up my driveshaft, and noticed there is a noticeable amount of play in the carrier bearing.

I have also been having a whine/ringing noise when i am off the gas and there is back pressure, a bit of a growl at certain rpm's when on the gas, and the whining/ringing is still there, but much quieter when rolling in neutral.

nasty dent on driver's side bed panel, shabby seats, cigarette burned interior roof, missing berf bar pad, cracked rain visor, removed hood scoop, unmentionable stain on back bench?
been havinga similar problem with my drive shaft as well. When it was up on the rack I rolled the wheels and noticed it was coming from the u-joint. Although my truck's drive shaft has grease fittings. Which is odd because i thought all toyota drive shafts would have factory closed fittings. Now that I know this I will grease the shaft( :)) lol, evry three months or oil change. I am Wondering what replacing this drive shaft is like though as far as labor involved as well as cost of replacement parts.

there is suppose to be a little play in the carrier bearing but by a little i mean like 1/4'' max. Its not to labor extensive to take out the stock driveshaft, 4 bolts in front,2 in middle holding up the double cardan u joints,4 in back. If you do decide to take it down just remember to set your e brake. The u joints are just like any other u joints to change, quite easy. Dont even bother wastin your time with the 2 u joints in the middle, theyre not meant to be changed,u cant even buy u joints for that part of the shaft. I found out the hard way.

ok so I was just outside trying to find where my noises are coming from, i put the rear end of the truck up on jackstands and had my buddy run the truck in 2nd gear, the grinding noise is MUCH louder than I thought, and is definitely metal on metal grinding, i tried with it locked and it's the same..
    wtf did i break?

    full of synthetic.

no, it's most definitely INSIDE the diff, I was told I need to pull the 3rd member, bring it to a gear shop and have them put a new master install kit which is new bearings throughout, and hopefully the R&P is fine, but it's been a month, so I'd imagine it's fucked and I'll need new gears too.

so how do I find out if my drive shaft is "totally fucked" as well? To whom would I take it to find out? What could I expect to pay for such diagnostic activity?

Hell, I don't see why you couldn't set your drive shaft on a level surface & throw a good level or a straight edge on it(in several places on the driveshaft) for a quick check to see if its bent , warped or ?? Try it & let us know, good luck......

Sometimes the only thing that has saved my frame from damage is hitting the driveshaft first (j/k) You see where I'm going with this don't ya ?? lol

I was tired of having vibes and noises coming from my drive shaft after lifting, and just bit the bullet on a Tom Woods one piece. What a great mod! Its sooo smooth and strong. :)

yea the tires are fine and the bearing went on just as it came off im assuming the u-joints are bad i hear a noise that sounds like metal raping around the drive shaft ever now and then.
