U bolts suck...HELP??

so on my dads truck we tried to replace his leaf pack and we cant get the u bolts off. i used a 400 foot pound impact wrench and it wont move. i have heard of PB Blaster but is there any thing else? any other ideas?

 

i wanted to do that but he doesnt want too.

 

Sean is right. You really should replace them anyway.

 

^That. You should replace them anyways and cutting those bishes off will be the fastest way to get them off.

 

Plus, the sparks will look cool, take pictures.

Where else does that (not wanting to do what seems to be obvious) show up for your dad? Good luck and I +1 to the idea that they really should be replaced anyway. He could also use one of these if he is dead set against replacing the bolts!

 

Do NOT reuse your existing u-bolts. They are extremely cheap insurance and should never been reused in the first place.

Either take a cut off wheel to them, or slice them with a torch.

Seriously, you should just cut and replace. It is my understanding that U-bolts are designed to stretch when torqued to spec. Thus making them a one shot deal.

You tighten the hell out of that set screw that grabs the nut, and then slip a breaker bar over the silver hexed part and pull like a mad man.

 

Something every tool box should have - nut breaker.

 

I heard that about the stretching too.

 

And remember stretch = strain hardening = brittleness = snap!

 

I agree with everybody else's consensus that cutting and replacing is best. I"ll add that while a grinder is best, if you don't have one, a sawzall could work too.
