Loud squeal when I let off the gas.

I have a loud squeal when i let off the gas. i'm thinking it could be the power steering pump going bad. sometimes it does it and sometimes it don't. but when it does, it will continue to do it even after i get back into the gas for a little while. sometimes 2-3 min before it stops. it can get pretty loud and annoying. i checked the PS fluid and it's good. only 68k on this truck. any suggestions?

 

Get some belt dressing from an autoparts store. Spray the belts and try it again. Slipping belts can cause squeals and that could bve an easy fix.

 

It might be your drive shaft. Just get up under it and hook a grease gun to the fittings on the shaft and make sure you get them on there good and pump i in till you hear a little pop. theres a bunch on the drive shaft. and clean them off before you hook on to them.

 

Start small. Check your belts and check the idler pulleys.
Does it do this when parked as well? If it does you can rule out the driveshaft.

Also, if it is indeed your power steering pump, does it make a straining sound when you turn the wheel while parked or not? If it is a high pitched squeal then I would def look at the belts and even go so far as to remove them and make sure you don't have a siezed idler pulley. If any one of your belts look "glassed" and brittle on the grooved side, then you have a seized pulley. But take them all off and inspect it all.

 

as far as i can tell it only does when i'm driving it. i have not heard it with it parked and running...yet anyway.

 

@Nowhereman04 Have you recently changed your brakes?

 

Try the driveshaft then. Its not hard to do. and even if thats not it, it probably needs done.

 

thanks for all the help guys. as a matter of fact Jag, i have. i had brakes put on it a month ago. i used OEM pads and had the rotors turned. and i have also noticed a smell recently, like something has been getting hot, after i drive it. and that started right after i had the brakes put on it.

 

I recently had changed my brakes and a lil after that I was getting this awful squeal when I would let off the gas... I had the rotors turned twice think.n it was them. But I limited it to my hawk racing performance pads. They were making slight contact with the rotors. Hawk said to give it 1500 miles to break in... so I did and still had the squeal... so I got my refund. So I went back to stock pads and its gone.

Did you do the brakes yourself? Did you clean the pins that hold the brake pads? Do you have the shims installed on the back of the brake pads? Try getting that brake disc grease and putting some on the back of the pads where it comes into contact with the caliper. (NOT on the rotor side)

Edit: If you paid someone to do the brakes I would tell them you are getting a squeal and they'll maybe fix it for free.

 

i'll definitley have my brake guy check them. like i said, i used original Toyota pads. it just started this noise last night. i would say i've got around 800 miles on this brake job.

 

I wouldn't imagine OEM pads would cause a problem that late into use however, it is not impossible. Check the pads and belts for sure. Belts are funny in the fact that the sounds are decieving and hard to pin point. And you don't want to stick your head in the bay to find out where it is coming from because it is loud and you may like your face intact.

i checked the breaks and i don't see a problem. i gonna put new belts on it and check the idler pully when i change them. thanks for all you help guys.

 

Maybe it's just your truck telling you that you're a pussy and need to hit the next mud hole faster. LOL

 

i had the same problem and it was fixed by giving the U-joint a good lubeing. look under your car at the rear axle where the driveshaft connects thats the U-joint. now grease it up reall good and that shopuld make it stop! it worked for me
