I have been tired of a vehicle payment for a while and have been keeping my eye out for a 1st gen XCab 4x4 at my local dealers. Well, I found one and traded my 08 PreRunner in today. I found a 1997 Tacoma XCab 4x4 V6 5 speed. Get this, it has 259,000 miles on it! haha. But I'm not really scared of it...it runs great! I could rebuild 3 or 4 engines for the price difference between these two trucks. My other truck was too nice to use as a work truck, which is essentially what I need. I was driving my wife's Trailblazer to work most days because I was afraid of something happening to my Tacoma. Well, those days are gone now and it feels great having something you don't really have to worry about. Also, it feels great not having payments anymore! Oh yeah, and this one's 4 wheel drive.

    Here is a pic:

dang nice dude... I have been keeping an eye out for a good 1st gen to make as my 4 wheel drive rig. There are a bunch on craigslist... they are running around 5 grand for a single cab 4 wheel drive.

I hope you got a great trade... Nothing against 1st gens at all (I own one), but that's a lot of miles for a truck you don't know the history of. I bought mine used with 40K, but I know what has been done to it since then. With 250K+ you better hope the old owner(s) changed the oil regularly and kept up the regular maintenance. (Changing fluids, brakes, transmission maintenance, spark plugs, air filters, etc.) It would suck to buy a truck that someone hadn't taken care of to eventually fail you. Sorry, I don't mean to bring you down about your purchase! Good luck with it

I actually feel that did get a good trade. They paid my truck off (around 20k) and I paid 4k cash for this rig. I had my old truck for sale for 21k for a while and had no bites. It's a one owner truck and all maintenance was done by the dealer. I don't have to completely depend on this truck as my DD, so if it does break down it's no big deal.

I'd call it cool score to be out from under the payments and recalls especially if the extra interior width is no issue. That's one thing I really like about the 2nd gens. Diggin that 1st gen you got there. Is it gray or tan interior? Have always dug those oem wheels too.

Thanks. Yes, I can notice a difference in interior width for sure, but it doesn't bother me. I had a regular cab Ranger before my 2nd gen, so this is still an improvement.

The interior is tan, I wish it was gray...but it's no big deal. BTW, does anyone know if I have auto locking hubs or not? Weren't auto locking hubs an option for this year? I don't see a lock on the front hub, but just wondering....Thanks!
