I have a buddy that has a 1st gen Tacoma. He recently took it into Toyota and they said he had to do the buyback. He doesn't want to do the buy back because he just put a lift on and wheels. Is there any way that you can have them do the frame replacement instead of the buy back?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
If it is a buy back then he has a 95.5 to 00. They have no frames for them. He is SOL.

He'll get more from the buy back then if he sold it I think, and they should let him take off his mods.

Yeah I dont think he will be able to take his lift off because he had to cut the frame for the front suspension and I doubt he still has his old parts. I think the only thing he will be able to save is his wheels and his truck cap. He is pretty pissed, he has only had the lift for about 3 months and I know he spent alot putting the lift in.

I had a 00 that had a lift and 33" tires on it. when it failed the safety test i took it home and stripped it and i mean i stripped it!!! Put the lift on my buddys 98 front and rear bumpers came off, spare, mud flaps, stereo plus a whole bunch more...loaded it on a trailer and dropped it off..got big bucks for it, took the money and went out and bought a 09....got to love toyota.

I think they'll factor in the cost of his upgrades and reimburse him. I had an aftermarket trailer hitch on my 2000 and when they were running down my truck's accessory list based on the serial number, I told them I wanted to be paid for the hitch and they took care of me. The folks I dealt with were very nice and I think it's the same outfit doing all the buybacks nationwide - it's a third-party outfit, not Toyota and not the dealer. Talk to them.

The buyback is a spectacular good deal... it was hard to let go of my 2000, but now I'm much happier in my new ride - Tacomas have come a long way since 2000!

Toyota is taking very good care of its customers right now. I wouldnt worry about it. Just ask and then ask again if you have to. They will deliver i'm sure.

When they took my 2000, they gave me more than what I paid for it 6 years before! That's why I'm driving a 2010 now....otherwise, I would still be driving that baby. I had put an after market hitch on and they priced it as a "Tow Package". Have your friend price it through KBB, full retail and see what he comes up with (even with the mods he has to leave on)...then multiply that by 1.5 and that is what Toyota will most likely offer him.

Giving back my "99" on Monday. Don't want to either the only thing wrong is the frame's rusting. "2000" and newer they will replace the frame N/C. Only good thing is I found a "03" TRD in incredible shape out of Texas. Basicly Toyota bought it for me but I looked all over the country for months.
I've heard from another buy back that if your persistant they'll let you keep any after market parts.

What he said. I tried for the frame replacement and was told "No"....buy back only.
