I just had a neighbor tell me the same thing about his 2.7 Prerunner...there is either a plugged vaccuum line or something else with the emissions. He took it to a friend's shop and they were able to fix the problem. They didn't tell him exactly what was wrong but it's fixed.

Hello I am also getting 8 mpg but mine started doing it after I got stuck in a mud puddle and flooded my cab. I checked my ecu and it doesnt look burnt and it doesnt smell like it either. I have a Cold air intake I know its not the ecu, air filter, fuel filter, sending unit. Is there another relay that controls the fuel flow other than the ecu in the dash somewhere? Or could both o/2 sensors be bad or the maf?

14mpg? That's within the range of the lead foot driver..

MPG is highly depended on the style of driving.

Does that mean an engine is 'burning' leaking antifreeze into the cylinders??

    ... anyone?

Thread ressurection, I know, but it's my question.

It was my rear o2 sensor. the 96 taco's are notorious for frying em. and by running rich i ended up burning up my cat's on my exhaust too.

the only other time i've seen a car getting such a drasticly low mpg #'s was on a v8 mustang and only 4 cylinders were actually firing. the other 4 were just dumping raw fuel.

i'd make sure you are getting spark in all cylinders

Too much fuel pump pressure by chance? Regulator on fuel rail not working correctly? Just a couple of thoughts. Hope this helps.

Good info here. I'm getting 14 or so, better than 8 but still crap for a slow 4 banger. I did the full tune up / clean routine, but not sure about the cat or O2 sensors. Do those always throw codes?

I've mostly just put up with it, but then my dad rubs salt in the wound telling me how is getting 20 in his turbo F150 crew cab that he drives like a friggin' dragster.

I had a 91 4runner gas mileage was bad, it had no codes everything was tuned perfect. It ended up being the gas cap o- ring was shot and gas was evaporating,I know this because just before I replaced the gas cap I could smell gas coming out of gas door. Replaced gas cap and mileage went back up to where it was.
