I was in the same boat as your a few years ago when I wanted a 5spd DoubleCab. I knew I wanted a DoubleCab, but had always had 5spds and looked for a while before I found out they don't exist. Only Automatics in the 1st gen DoubleCabs. I've always thought about retrofitting one though, I think that would be pretty sweet. Although, I have come to really like my A/T and not shifting gears all the time in city traffic. I do still miss it, though.

Ive seen one. The only ones you will find are ones custom ordered and are very very rare.

Funny thing is i told my wife this morning that i want to do this swap when i re enlist this year, and i will.

As far as retrofitting, i have done this swap with a few cars, AE86 SR5 to a GTS, 85 Toyota Cressida auto to a 7MGTE + R154 5 spd to name the toyotas. You will need:

Trans that bolts up, obviously those are available
Driveshaft (if and only if a manual trans and auto trans have different lengths, i do not know at the moment if they are)
    5 speed pedal assembly
Clutch line (or bend your own with a bender, pretty easy just take your time)
    Clutch master cylinder

I believe thats it and you can get these very easily from a single donor vehicle, ie a wrecked tacoma. You MAY need a trans support, but maybe not, depends on trans length and location of the holes for bolts.

I would also recommend changing the clutch, pressure plate, rear main seal, and slave cylinder while you are already there. It seems like a lot but it really isnt that much if you are decent with tools. There should already be holes lined up on the firewall for the pedal assembly and master cylinder. If anyone does this before i do, please do a write up, as i plan to do a pic by pic write up when i do mine.

The original detailed (and illustrated) writeup on this conversion was posted out on Junglecode years ago. That documentation went MIA some time back. I salvaged the materials and reconstructed the writeup as an archive over on CustomTacos:

    http://www.customtacos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137151

There are also multiple threads on this conversion to be found over at Tacoma Territory.

Is it difficult to do? Or does the 5spd just bolt in?
