Thinking about getting a shell for my dc. Found a gold colored Snugtop I could get for $500. I would like to keep my stuff protected from the elements if I move back up north. Not sure if i'll use it that much. How much does a shell effect mpg's or resell value. Can anyone comment or post pictures of there's.

I wouldn't be without a shell. I like having all my stuff out of the elements and protected from theft.

I went from 16 to 17 mpg on the highway, with the shell on.

My used 01 came with a sweet Snugtop that would set me back well over $1000 if I were to purchase it new today. Had a couple little leaks in the rear door seal, which was easy to fix with silicone. Go visit the Snugtop web site. Your find sounds like a good deal...

However, DO NOT get it if it has a rubber boot rather than a window in the front. The boot will rub against the back of the cab and wear away the paint, and make noise that drives you totally ape-kaka. I know. I am in the middle of coming up with a desing to retrofit an OEM Snugtop fold-down front window in this big smoking whole that is too big for it. I have some ideas for using ABS or some other crazy plastics I found as an adapter plate, but it will be a PITA.

With regard to mileage, I have heard that the increased aerodynamics are generally negated by the addiitonal weight. I drive conservatively and am averaging 18.5-19 mpg mixed driving (V6 man.).

I didnt think it would help my mpg, especially because of the weight, but it seems to be a bit better now. pretty cool.
and keeping things safe and out of the elements is sweet, along with sleeping in it!
although you prob can't sleep in a DC bed

a bestop supertop would suite your needs. it folds away when not needed and provides weather protection for the things in your bed when you do need it.

they don't look as nice as the hard caps. ..but they're more functional.

I have the Leer top on mine and I really can't believe I drove for 5 years without it. I love mine. As for mileage I don't think it made a difference really. I did notice the truck seems a little more stable on the highway but no other real effects. I paid $900 for mine new a couple of years ago. The local Leer dealer here was hurting for business.

Picked it up last week. Got it cheaper then what he was asking. It wasn't in excellent condition like I was told. There was some paint missing in places around the edges and some scratches on top that you can't see. Overall it's not too bad. I got the wiring figured out over the weekend and I really seem to like it. Just need to adjust the rear window when it's closed so it's not so loose and the front.
