Accel issue with my 98

3/5/10 at approx 23:34 while backing out of a parking place it took off like it had a mind of it's own and crashed into a heavy duty light pole. I had my tailgate down so it took most of the damage. It crushed it even with the bumper and put a slight dent in the bumper. I hit my head on the rear window, but did not break either. I was able to remove the 2 bolts and the straps without issue......I know the 1st gen is not included in any recalls so I am curious if anyone has had a similar incident. I was lucky that 10+ people saw what happened so at least that won't be an issue. I am still cogitating about the next step. Thanks.

 

mine is a manual, but on my automatic camry, when it just starts up its at 2k rpm and i usually drive off right away so it goes pretty fast... possibly the same issue

 

HOLY HELL! I think I would shit myself if that happened to me!!

 

Im sorry, and im not saying this did not happen. But if your truck is a 98 Taco with either one of these engines (2rzfe,3rzfe or 5vzfe, it will has a manual throttle body) meaning cable and sping not a drive by wire (like in the recall) its just like a old carburator engine. So in order for that to happen the spring must of had debris or something in it in order to cause it to get stuck. Maybe from not cleaning it out enough or something. That being said, this had absolutly nothing to this with the recall. It was probably from lack of maintence. JMO.

And your next step should be taking that Throttle body off and going to town on it with cleaning! And clean the hell outta the throttle spring!

 

The is because I did or because I need to fill out more?............I checked all of the above mentioned. There is no obvious cause. All that should be clean,is very clean and "sea foamed" etc... Oh well, thanks for the replies

 

Never had this issue with my old 01 or my new 10. If throttle body, spring is all clear, might be a vacuum leak causing a lean condition. Mix goes suddenly lean, engine will rev higher on its own. Might not be the case, but something to check.
