help with fence in driveshaft!

the past weekend i got unlucky along with another taco and got hung up on a fence. it hooked on my driveshaft and got wrapped around it. took a while to cut off and only damage was this dustcap type thing on the differential. it got a little bent up and now when i drive it makes a terrible squeaking!!!! what can i do to stop it? is it a cheap fix?

Looks like the pilot shaft will need to be pulled to get at the seal cover/seal. Looks like the cover is rubbing on the pilot shaft. Any new vibration in the rear?

Wow that sucks.. I had a similar encounter with a fence in my old blazer, but it ripped the rear shaft off. I drove home in 4x4 with only the front wheels pulling..lol

After seeing this I think I'll start carrying a good pair of wire cutters in the truck!

 

It will be interesting to see how a fence got wrapped around your drive shaft. I have ran into a fence, but never had this happen.

 

ya the cover is alot looser now and sounds like a tin can bouncing around no vibration but that the guy at goodyear said i cant get a new cover unless i buy a whole new bearing set for around $250 but i found a pinion seal online for $15 so wat do you think i gotta do??

its a fence you drive over to get to these dirtbike ramps in reche canyon and someone bent it up and my rear u-joint hooked it on the set screw and pulled it round

 

You need to take the truck to someone who can work on differentials. Or look at the factory service manual to see how the seal comes out and see whats next

The "thingy" you describe is the differential breather, it should be free moving like a pcv valve, if you push down on it lightly it should be slightly "springy" & pop back up, does the sound you hear sound like maybe a piece of wire wrapped around something when accelerating from a stop ? If so check U joints, you should have them checked if you can't yourself.... good luck.....

 

well in the pic the bent up piece they said it was the bearing seal (just a metal cap) but yes it is springy but wasnt like it is now i found that the sound is coming from how on the inside of the cap, where the driveshaft spins, the cap is bent up and the out of shape metal is screeching on the spinning driveshaft but to replace that cap is it an easy replacement or do i have to open up the diff to get it off?

 

Make that a set of bolt cutters!!!

 

i got it done in around 20 with some strong wire cutters and minor flesh wounds hah im keeping them in my truck now...and gloves
