So I'm thinking about buying an '01 Tacoma that has 184k miles on it. It's going to be my daily "beater." The dealer is asking $9000. Do you think it's worth it? How long is the Tacoma good for and is there anything I should pay attention to or ask about when I test drive it?

    Thanks up front! :)

Sorry, I should be more specific. It's 4X4, auto, w/ TRD.

Can you offer more details, e.g. ext or DC, or is there a link to the dealer? You'll probably get better feedback.

Sorry, I keep forgetting that there are dozens of configs for the Tacoma. It's the Xtra Cab w/V6. It's got power windows, mirrors, and locks (and A/C).

I figured I could talk them down to around $8k. There's no way I would pay what they're asking.

My biggest concern is reliability. This would be my daily driver for work.

it should be a good daily driver as long as its been kept up. 180k+ miles isnt bad for a taco. but $9,000!! way to much i bought my truck for 9k with 138k on it and its an 04

my 01 currently has over 223,000 miles, and does the below at least once a month...

its a reliable truck so long as you take good care of it...

i have been running synthetic oil in it since i bought it new at the dealership, oil changes religiously ever 5,000 miles, timing belt and water pump, and alternator every 90,000 and its been good to me...

We have three of the 1st gen Tacomas. Two have well over 100k miles. If you take care of them, they will last. I wouldn't be concerned about the mileage at 186k. I recently saw a DC 4x4 with 250k on it. I have heard of very few issues with these trucks. Change the oil often and do the timing belts per Toyota recommendations. I do believe the 3.4 is a non-interference engine. Records would be a plus. $7500 would be a good buy if all checks out. Bonus if it's white.

Your buying from a dealer? Ask them to include a warranty. And 9k is too much.

Also insist on a frame inspection and warranty for that. :)

Thanks for the info everyone. I talked to the dealer yesterday and it's been sold. The salesman wouldn't tell me what the other guy paid for it. It turns out it was a 5spd, which is not what I want for work. It's not a deal breaker, per se; just being picky right now.

I'm amazed at what people and dealers are asking for a 2001-2002 Tacoma. There's one dealer not too far from me asking $15000 for a 2001 4cyl Xtra Cab, 4X4, w/113k miles on it. Does the fact that it's white add $7500 to the price tag? I've seen a lot of over-inflated prices for Tacomas online lately.
