has anyone thought about trying to put one of the retractable rear windows like the new tundras in a first gen taco? i'd love to have one but i have about as much clue of how to do it than a bear knows how to fly.

If you're talking about the upper tier vertical slider ... Unless you want to try tearing out and rebuilding the cab's rear wall, it can't happen. This is a full-on custom fabrication job.

If you're talking about a horizontal power sliding window ... Laurence used to offer a horizontal slider unit for 1995.5 - 2004 Tacomas.

yeah ive seen horizontal sliding windows in the neighborhood of $500 (seemed cheap to me...but i aint complaining)

a vertical sliding one would be impossible without major modification due to the design of the rear cab wall i would think
