On my way to work this morning my truck developed a problem. I felt a small hiccup and knew something was amiss. I stepped on the gas and the check enging light came on. It was running real rough and had no power. I limped to a nearby parking lot and hooked up my scanner. I got a PO301 code. Misfire detected cylinder 1. Made it back home. Changed out the plugs, distributor cap and rotor button. Made it a little better. Seems to run fine then starts missing.
Should I try to replace the wires or just take it to the mechanic?

Any oil or anything on the plug when you took it out or anything like that. Try changing out the wire and go from there.

you might want to consider a compression test soon too. just in case

    Sounds like a fuel injector.

No oil on the plug. All of them looked pretty much the same. Hoping it is not something like timing or bad compression. But my thinking is that it would run lousy all the time if it was one of those. Not the intermittent spells of seeming to run OK that I am getting.

    Thanks for the help.

What are your thoughts on the fuel injector?

I think it is possible, but I have mostly seen it being a wire, plug or coil/distributor issue with the 300 series code.

Ah.... I have seen it as FI's in the past. Well....OP....Start with the cheapest, and work up. What Ben said would be a good beginning point.

my old wrx would throw a p0304 code only during cold start ups. the compression test was fine and the plugs were too. turned out to be valve shims that were getting out of spec. not sure if you have a maf/map but cleaning it up would help too. if you want to try the injector theory, swap it to another cylinder and see if the code moves

X2. Swapping the wires would rule them out as well....

Replace the plug wires first. toyotas like factory ignition parts but you can try some good aftermarket ones. i would not go after a fuel injector if i got better and then started up again.

It turned out to be just a bad plug wire. Strange how it just went bad.
    Thanks for all the help.:)
