Help with E Locker swap.

Ok I have a 2004 Prerunner V6 non TRD so I have an open differential, I have been searching the internet and this site as thoroughly as I can and I have found a couple write ups and such but I just can't seem to find any solid answers. Is it possible for me to find say an e locker off a wrecked or something 1st gen Tacoma, or a 4-runner? The 4-runners have them too right? But will I be able to just swap in the differential carrier with the locker? what modifications if any will I need to do to my housing? Or is this not possible and will I need to swap my entire axle? Looking for some solid answers, thanks for your time.

 

I didn't know that a Prerunner could be "non-TRD". I assumed that being a Prerunner that it had a locking diff by default, you really need to address this question to Chris4x4 (moderator) he's pretty sharp on the Toyota stats & specs.. good luck....

Yeah Just a Trim like the SR5 gotta have the TRD to get locker but Alright thanks I hope he posts! and Hmm the link didn't work for me.

 

You'll need to swap out the entire rear end.

The e-locker is based on the older 'V6 / Turbo' differential, and your non-TRD V6 6-lugger has the '8.4' differential. Transplanting the e-locker 'guts' into an 8.4 housing requires tricky machining / modifications and isn't worth the expense.

 

So...do the whole axle swap right?

 

You'd have a much easier time just swapping out the whole axle. I think junked ones can be found reasonably priced. Have you considered just putting an ARB in yours?

That writeup is for an e-locker transplant into a 4Runner - which also uses the 'V6 / Turbo' version of the 8" differential. In other words, this was a 'same into same' swap.

This doesn't apply to Tacomas. The OP has the '8.4' - an entirely different unit.

 

Alright Thanks guys yeah learning that I have an 8.4" Diff and thats not what the e locker is was what I needed to know, so ill look into swapping the whole axle, anyone got a guess how much a scrapyard might run for that? But yeah thanks for the good advice.

 

with everythng i want to do to my truck... getting both back wheels to spin is just a pipe dream....for now
